Defenders of the Family Proclamation
“Relief Society helps women prepare for the blessings of eternal life by helping them increase their faith and personal righteousness, strengthen families and homes, and help those in need.” (Handbook 2: 9.1.1)
Sisters, we are so blessed to have The Family: A Proclamation to the World as a guide to help us protect and strengthen our families today. In the seventh paragraph of the proclamation we read, “The family is ordained of God. Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. Successful marriages and families are established and maintained on principles of faith, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work, and wholesome recreational activities.” These divine principles are key in the foundation of strong families. Elder Vinas of the Seventy said,”These principles, once applied, will act as a light that will illuminate each member of the family and will lead us to integrate other related values and principles which will strengthen family relationships.”
Sister Bonnie Oscarson recently gave a talk titled “Defenders of the Family Proclamation”. In it, she says, “We should make our homes places of order, refuge, holiness, and safety. Our homes should be places where the Spirit of the Lord is felt in rich abundance and where the scriptures and the gospel are studied, taught, and lived.”
