Message from Superintendent Mueller
Good evening,
Congratulations on the completion of CUSD Distance Learning - Week One! The environment has changed 100% for our teachers, students and families and represents a considerable shift from the traditional school setting. It is universally understood that one cannot replicate a full-time school program. With the suddenness of mandated school and societal closures, we are all responding and adjusting to our new reality in real time. We applaud the efforts of our staff who have designed content and found creative ways to connect with students. As reflective practitioners, we acknowledge that we still have work to do and that we must always remain focused on continuous improvement. We also understand the need to model humility and patience throughout this experience as this is new for all of us.
We are sensitive to striking a balance between the emotional well-being of our students, and providing the academic rigor which will ensure a secure foundation for success in subsequent grade levels / courses. We also recognize the impact school closures have had on our parents and guardians and value your constructive feedback. Your contributions to our school communities during these unprecedented times are greatly appreciated. Our staff members, like you, are navigating the substantial impact of COVID-19 on their family and loved ones, personal health, and environment. Thank you for your continued grace and encouragement of their efforts.
Trust that CUSD is committed to providing valuable learning experiences and endeavor to achieve our mission to connect, challenge, and champion every child, every day.
Enjoy a safe and restful Holiday Weekend!

Assessing Student Achievement
Student Grades: Staff is currently collecting data and engaged in discussions to determine how we, as a district, will assess student achievement during Distance Learning. The two most adopted models, issuing pass/no pass semester marks or traditional letter grading, have advantages and disadvantages. We do not believe that our elementary and secondary schools have to be aligned in grading practice. Our guiding principles of equity, access, and fairness for each child are non-negotiable. This decision will be made on what is best for all of the students we serve in Coronado Unified. We appreciate those who have reached out to express opinions and advocate, and we anticipate releasing our grading policy by April 27th.
Accountability: Your child is expected to fully engage in the experiences our educators have designed for them and participate in teacher 'office hours' if they have any questions or concerns.
Support: If you and/or your child is struggling to meet expectations outlined by staff, or you are interested in sharing feedback on Distance Learning, please contact us at information@coronadousd.net for administrative, counseling, or technological support.
CUSD Grab-and-Go Meal Service
Grab-and-Go Meal Service at Village Elementary and Silver Strand
When: Every Monday (with the exception of 4/13 'holiday' - pick up 4/14)
Location: Multi-Purpose Rooms at VES (H Street) and Silver Strand Elementary
Distribution Time: 11:00AM - 1:00PM (while supplies last)
Our next distribution day will be Tuesday, 4/14 at 11AM. All families with children 18 and under will be able to pick up free breakfast and lunch meals via curb-side pick-up. Each child will receive one bag that contains 4 days’ worth of meals for breakfast and lunch. Meals may consist of packaged, refrigerated, and/or frozen items (heating instructions will be provided). District and school staff will start "Grab and Go Distribution" of meal bags at 11AM, and will stop once all bags are distributed on a first come, first-served basis.
All meals will be distributed curb-side to decrease the risk of exposure. Bags will be placed into automobile trunks-they will not be handed through the vehicle window for the protection of both our staff and vehicle occupants. Only those in cars will be served meals during this pick-up window, no walk ups or bicycles are allowed in order to maintain social distancing protocols. If you are unable to pick-up meals by car or during the scheduled distribution time, please email Charity.Campbell@coronadousd.net on or before Friday, April 10 at noon and we will schedule an alternative window to pick-up a meal.
Meals may not be distributed to students. Students who are receiving meals are encouraged to be physically present at the time of pick-up. Additionally, adults may pick up meals for students not present by printing and submitting this form at the time of pick-up. No meals will be distributed to parents/guardians without a child present or a form submitted at time of pick up due to state regulations.
While the program was designed to serve the neediest families in our community, children are not required to be students of Coronado Unified School District. On April 6, the first day of meal distribution, we served 5 breakfast meals and 5 lunch meals to 630 children, 6300 meals in total. With such an overwhelming response, we will be preparing even more meals to accommodate our school community. This is free for all children, regardless of meal status - please spread the word!
