The Seahawk Scoop

April 26, 2021

Dear Beach Middle Families,

Beginning tomorrow we gain one more step back towards normalcy as we welcome students to the building for 4 days per week. We can't wait. I have included our new schedule below. We have made some minor adjustments to lunch times for 7th and 8th grades. Class times are not impacted.

With the return of additional students, we anticipate a slight increase in traffic congestion for parent drop off and pick up. We will continue to dismiss walkers and parent pick up students at 4:23 to help with a staggered release. We ask for patience as we work through this change. Please be reminded that students are not allowed to cross the parking lot to meet their rides. They must wait on the curb in front of the school for their parent to arrive. The safety of our students is our top priority. We ask that if you need to pick your child up early, please do so no later than 4:00. Our staff is stretched and we need those last 20 minutes to prepare for dismissal.

This week we will wrap up our celebration of April as the Month of the Military Child. SCA and Anchored 4 Life have collaborated on a Spirit Week- the flyer with information is below. A QR code is included so that our virtual students and staff can participate. We are so thankful for the sacrifices of our military connected families.

Finally, if you haven't yet done so, please review the Division's communication from last week regarding the Virtual option for next year. It will be through the state's Virtual Virginia program. I have linked the Frequently Asked Question document below. More information, including a parent survey, will be coming soon.

Thank you for your continued support of Beach Middle. Have a Super Week!

VBCPS April 22 Communication- Virtual Virginia FAQ's

For families who choose virtual instruction for the 2021-22 school year, the Virtual Virginia (VVA) program will be the primary learning platform. VVA courses are aligned to Virginia standards of learning, taught by certified teachers across the Commonwealth, and all costs are covered by VBCPS. This option is open to all current students and to any family who resides in Virginia Beach and enrolls their child into VBCPS for school year 2021-22.

All families choosing VVA will receive 100% of their instruction virtually for one full year. Students will be assigned to a VBCPS home school based on their address. Enrollment in VVA will not include any VBCPS academy or advanced academic programs as that curriculum requires in-person learning at the home school. Students may participate in extracurricular activities at the home school, including athletics, SCA and clubs. Participation in any activities at the home school will require the student to provide their own transportation.

A pre-enrollment survey will be available to all families through ParentVUE Thursday, April 29. A survey will need to be filled out for each child enrolled in VBCPS.

If you would like more information on the virtual option for 2021-22, please visit the division's FAQ site.

Tdap/Meningitis Vaccine (Rising 7th Grade)

Students who will be in 7th grade during the 2021-22 school year will need a tDap and meningitis vaccine. More information on this will be sent soon. Please do not delay in making the appointment as they fill up fast. Feel free to contact Ann James, School Nurse, at 648-5050, if you have questions.

Dress Code Reminders

We need your help. As the weather gets warmer, we are noticing some trends with dress code that we need to address. All tops must cover the midriff/abdomen area unless a tank top that reaches the waistline is worn underneath. Tops should cover the shoulder- spaghetti straps and tank tops are not allowed unless students have another layer on top (sweater, jacket, sweatshirt). These expectations apply to boys and girls. These are the primary issues we are seeing. Staff are currently reviewing the dress code for modifications. A revised copy will be sent to families soon.

Internet Assistance Program

The Department of Technology (DOT) has updated and revised the internet support request process for use by families of Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) students. The current options for internet access can be reviewed at the DOT technology support website. In addition to the available internet access providers available in Virginia Beach, students may also use data plans on their smart phones, WIFI access inside and outside of school buildings, and for those families who qualify, the VBCPS Internet Assistance Program.

The Internet Assistance Program will provide qualifying families either a $10 subsidy paid directly to a family’s Cox Communications account or a hotspot if the family cannot receive internet services through Cox Communications. To qualify, families must be enrolled in an approved government assistance program (SNAP, TANF, NSLP, WIC, Head Start, LIHEAP, or Public Housing) or have a demonstrated need for internet access support. The vetting of internet support requests will no longer be completed at the school level but will now be completed by DOT. In addition to vetting all requests, DOT staff will also coordinate the distribution of the hotspots and management of the Cox subsidies.

If students or families have questions regarding the program, they can reference the information provided online, or call the Customer Support Center at (757) 263-1111. Questions or concerns regarding the Internet Assistance Program can be emailed to Michael Combs, at Michael.Combs@vbschools.com.

It is vital to our return efforts that we have accurate information so that appropriate quarantine protocols are followed.
