Stayton Elementary School
February Cheetah News
Principal's Corner
The district is in the process of planning for students to return to in person school. Mr. Gardner is monitoring the health metrics for Marion county closely. Currently our numbers are trending down. As long as our numbers continue to trend down we will be moving forward with students returning to school using a hybrid model. This means students will come to school on a modified schedule. This schedule will look different at each school.
Currently we are aiming to begin our hybrid model sometime late February or early March. Planning for students' return is complex. We will need to have a plan for the students who will return in person as well as have a plan for the students who will continue to learn through our Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL) model. As we continue to plan it is important that we know your intentions around returning in person with our hybrid model or continuing with CDL.
Stayton Elementary will be bringing back students who wish to return 4 days a week. We will have an A group and a B group. The students in group A will attend school Tuesday - Friday for 2.5 hours, roughly 8:00-10:30. Students in group B will also attend school Tuesday - Friday for 2.5 hours, roughly 12:00-2:30. We are unable to bring back all students all day as we must follow the Oregon's Department of Education Ready Schools Safe Learners guidance. All students will attend school online on Mondays, time is still yet to be determined.
We sent out a survey a couple of weeks ago asking for families to let us know their intentions. It is very important for you to communicate with your child's teacher if you have changed your mind about whether your child will participate in our hybrid model or our CDL model. Transportation services will be limited due to the restrictions around how many students can be on a bus. We will be only honoring those requests of students who live one mile or more from the school. If you have requested bus services and live within the one mile radius you will need to transport your child to school or choose to have your child remain in CDL.
Because we will have some students attending our hybrid model and some students attending our CDL model some class assignments will need to change. We will have three teachers remain as our CDL teachers and the remainder will teach in our hybrid model. We understand that asking your child to switch teachers mid year is not ideal. It is necessary to make this change so that we can meet the needs of both in person instruction and CDL, which is a requirement of the Ready Schools Safe Learners guidance. All Limited In Person Instruction (LIPI) will stop and students will go into our hybrid or CDL model, whichever you have chosen. We will notify families of the exact stop date of LIPI once we finalize our plans.
We ask for your patience and understanding as we navigate through this complex transition. As we get closer to students returning and finalizing our plan we will be sure to communicate if your child will remain with their current teacher (most students will) or be assigned to a new teacher (roughly 85 students). I know this is a stressful time, please know we are doing everything in our power to make this transition as smooth as possible.
AVID Corner
SES 2nd graders have been developing their collaboration skills through technology! They have learned to work in breakout rooms with a partner or in a group. They have also discovered the collaborative abilities of Jamboards. They especially love providing feedback to each other through the Seesaw class blog.
Third grade is working on helping students collaborate and support each other in their thinking and learning. Teachers are supporting conversations in small groups by teaching students sentence structures that promote discussion. Students are asking each other questions and responding with their ideas and opinions. It has been great to see them learning so much from their peers.
Immunization Exclusion Day is February 17th
Chromebook Issues?
Our technology department can do a "power wash" and that seems to help. If you are noticing that the chromebook will not turn on, will not hold a charge, has a black screen etc. you can email our help desk and they can do a power wash to see if that fixes the issues. When you email, please let them know you would like a power wash. They will also need the chromebook number. This is a sticker with a 5-digit number on it. The sticker is located near the keyboard or on the bottom of the chromebook. Most begin with 1. If that does not work, please let the technology department know and they may refer you to come to the school office.
We ask that you also treat each chromebook with special care. Please keep food and drinks away and set it down on a hard, level surface when in use or charging.
