Literacy Volunteers - Book Sorting
Wednesday, September 14th from 6 - 8PM and Friday, September 16th from 3-6 PM
The mission of Literacy Volunteers of Upshur County (LV-UC) is to foster and promote literacy and life skills among adults in Upshur County and the surrounding counties who have low-level reading and math skills. LV-UC in a nonprofit organization that relies on fundraising activities as an important source of funding. Book Sales are held twice a year and are the organization’s largest fundraising events. Book sorting in our storage facility in advance of the sale allows us to separate books according to specific categories, and ensure the quality of the books to be included in the sale. We know from experience that well organized, quality books translate to a successful fundraiser. By participating in our Book Sorting Party you will directly help support the success of this fundraiser.
To volunteer please contact Emily Stasny (stasny_ea@wvwc.edu) or Kendra Sullivan (lvaupco@wirefire.net).
Get Up & Get Moving - Rock Cave Elementary
In an effort to promote healthy lifestyles among the children living in and around the local Buckhannon area, the WE LEAD Appalachian Experience team is looking for volunteers to travel to Rock Cave Elementary school and play games with the children. Student volunteers play a variety of sports with the children and spend a lot of time talking with the kids. The event is a lot of fun for the children, and they always look forward to spending time with the old college kids. If you are interested in reducing obesity rates among youth or just have a passion to help local kids, this is the event for you. Spread the Love Peanut Butter Drive
September 19-30th, 2016
WVWC will again be participating in the Governor's Day to Serve initiative by collecting peanut butter for local food pantries. Peanut butter is a high-demand item at food pantries because of its accessibility for kids and families in addition to its nutritional value. Drop-off boxes will be located throughout campus and in community locations. If anyone would like to donate peanut butter, they can bring it to the Center for Community Engagement & Leadership Development located behind the Bobcat Den on the 2nd floor of the Benedum Campus Center. Questions? Contact LeeAnn Brown at 304-473-8161.

One student described the program by saying, "Because of the LEAP program, I now feel more confident in my academic program, dealing with personal issues, and I am better prepared for a future career."
