Subject of Sentences

The subject of a sentence is the person or thing doing the action or being decribed. It is who or what the sentence is about. The simple subject is the one word that the sentence is about.

For example.:

  • The small boy chased his dog, Charlie, across the backyard. BOY is the simple subject.
  • He laughed when the dog tripped over a stick. HE is the simple subject.
  • The sky is glowing red. SKY is the simple subject.
  • Sally made a 100 on her spelling test. SALLY is the simple subject.

"Vacation" Paragraph

Create a new google doc and title it vacation, last name, first name. Write a paragraph about your favorite vacation. It could be about a vacation you have actually been on or it could be about your "dream" vacation (a vacation you have never been on but would love to go). Be sure to tell me where and about all the things you would do there. Don't forget ICP.

Make the simple subjects bold.

Padlet for your Subjects

Create a post on the padlet beginning with your name. List the one word simple subjects from your paragraph. Then add any subjects you can think of to make a list of 25 simple subjects.


Complete Monday's Work

  1. Be sure to complete your vacation paragraph and make the simple subjects bold.
  2. Post your simple subjects on your padlet and add more simple subjects until you have a total of 25.

Google Classroom

  • Go to google classroom and complete the assignment on simple subjects.
  • When you are finished turn it in.
  • Be sure to read and follow directions.


Complete Subjects

A complete subject is the simple subject, or the main word or words in a subject, along with any other words that describe the subject.

For example:

  • Bean burritos make a great meal.

(What makes a great meal? Bean burritos make a great meal. Bean burritos is the complete subject.)

  • Joshua’s road bike is much faster than his mountain bike.

(What is much faster than his mountain bike? Joshua’s road bike is much faster than his mountain bike.Joshua’s road bike is the complete subject.)

  • My friend, Suki, is a great basketball player.

(Who is a great basketball player? My friend, Suki, is a great basketball player. My friend, Suki, is the complete subject.)

Practice picking out the simple subjects and complete subjects.

Simple Predicate

The simple predicate is the main verb in the predicate that tells what the subject does.

Open up your vacation paragraph from Monday in google documents. Underline the simple predicate.

Complete Predicate

The complete predicate of a sentence tells what the subject does or is. It includes a verb and all other details that describe what is going on.

For example: My father fixed the dryer. The complete predicate is fixed the dryer.

Open up you vacation paragraph. Make sure you have done the following:

  • ICP
  • simple subjects are bold
  • complete subjects are blue
  • simple predicates are underlined
  • complete predicates are red

Make sure your doc is titled correctly and it has your name and date in the document at the top.

Turn in the completed document to google classroom.
