What is cyberbullying?
Cyberbullying is when a person(s) bullies, harasses, or intimidates someone over the internet for the fun of it.
Examples of cyberbullying
- Mean text messages
- Rumors posted on social media sites
- People using fake profiles to spread rumors
Three differences between cyberbullying and bullying
- Cyrberbullying can happen 24/7 and can follow the kid home
- Pictures and mean things people say can be posted anonymously and spread quickly
- Deleting inappropriate and harassing text messages or emails can be extremely difficult after they've been sent or posted
Effects of bullying
- Kids can have lower self-esteem
- skip school
- Use alcohol or drugs
- Receive poor grades
- Have more health problems
Prevention and awareness
- Always check the websites they go on
- Keep up with the new apps and social media kids use these days
- Try to understand why the internet is so important to the kid
- Build a safe environment
- Create rules and policies
Establishing rules
- Don't post personal information
- Keep your social media profiles private
- Don't be so trusting of people on the internet
Reporting a Cyberbully
- Tell an adult
- Block the person
- Report the perosn
Report to your Online Service Provider
- Review their terms and conditions to see what content is and isn't appropriate for that website
- Report cyberbullying to the social media site so they can take action agaisnt users abusing the terms of service
Report to your local Law Enforcement
- If the person is threatening your family and saying I know where you live etc.
- If the person doesn't stop and it carries into school and the child is getting harassed there
- If the person is putting personal and private information out that can be harmful to your family
Report to your School
- Talk to students and bring awareness to cyberbullying
- Talk to the parents of the cyberbully because they probably don't know anything about their behavior online
