Lot's of stuff happening!
There is a lot of stuff going on that we are preparing for...We've got end of the year items we are preparing (Senior awards and more!), we JUST sent out the Battery audition music, plus we are working on building our leadership for next Marching Season!
We have already collected the Drum Major applications, we WILL be collecting the Section Leader Applications (Due April 27), and we will be sending out the last round of Leadership applications. These applications will be for:
Social Committee- we need 3 candidates who are up for the challenge of creating fun events during the summer, during Band camp (spirit week and more), Band Banquet (assist Mr. B), Band Dance (February), and more!
Truckie Coordinator- we need 3 candidates to help load the Blue Bus. These 3 are the ONLY students allowed on the bus.
Field Coordinator- 2 candidates in charge of making sure the field is ready for rehearsal (the speaker is out and set up, rookies set up ladders, and any other items needed for the field)
Rookie Coordinators- We need 3 candidates to work with the Social Committee and the Big Sib’s in making sure our Rookies are taken care of. This group can assist in planning Rookie events, reach out to the Rookies (leave no one behind), make sure the Big Sibs are being quality Big Sibs.
Media (YouTube, Photos, Band Banquet Slideshow, and more!)- We need 3 candidates to record videos, take pics, and any other means of promoting the Band through all media. These students are also in charge of creating the Band Banquet slideshow.
Drill Coordinators (Side 1, Side 2)- These 2 candidates are the Director’s eyes on the field. They need to make sure that everyone is in their spot and makes sure the drill is correct. These students must be EXCELLENT marchers and can learn drill very quickly. They must also be organized so they can teach drill if needed.

All CYWS groups are open to woodwind, brass and percussion players entering grades 7-12 in fall 2020. Please encourage your outstanding students to audition and share this information with your colleagues.
To ensure the health and safety of our community, all CYWS auditions for the 2020-21 season will take place online via video recording. Submitting an online CYWS audition is easy – simply direct your students to cim.edu/cyws and click the “apply now” button.
Audition Requirements

- If student is home-schooled or there is no music program at their school, then private music lessons will fulfill this requirement.
- Take private lessons on their band instrument.
- Students may audition if they are not currently taking private lessons.
- Upon acceptance into the program, students must enroll in lessons.

Rehearsal Times & Locations
- Saturdays, 9am to 11am (beginning August 2020 – May 2021)
- Cleveland Institute of Music (Kulas Hall) and CWRU (Wade Hall & Spartan Hall)
The CYWS program is a supplement to your school music program. We are committed to supporting the school band programs, and your school music obligations always take precedence over CYWS events. We are grateful for your support and enthusiasm, which are essential to making our program a continued success.
Attached you will find an audition flyer for our upcoming season. Please forward along to your students and let us know if you have any questions. We look forward to a wonderful season of music making!

John Philip Sousa Award
This award is the pinnacle of achievement in a high school band. Introduced in 1955 to honor the top student in the high school band, the John Philip Sousa Band Award recognizes superior musicianship and outstanding dedication. It was created with the approval of Helen Sousa Albert and Priscilla Sousa, daughters of the famous composer and bandmaster. This award goes to the most musical Senior. This is a National Award in which 1 senior is recognized every year from every participating High School. Mr. Brunger did not earn this award, but his father did! Also so did Mrs. Boettler. This award is not a popularity vote. Be honorable with your choice.
Louis Armstrong Award
This award was inaugurated in 1974 with the consent of his widow shortly after this great jazz artist died in 1971. It honors the outstanding jazz musician at each high school.
