G.W. Gazette

September 2020 Edition

The music group Earth, Wind & Fire released the song "Dancing in September" back in 1978. At GW, we are DANCING INTO SEPTEMBER because of the excellent start to our school year! We are SO proud of our students that have been wearing their masks, sanitizing and washing their hands, and being socially distanced. All of our GW Chiefs are getting into the new routine of school. It feels like a long time since we have been in school and this year is very different. Our school has risen to the challenge and will continue to make adjustments as needed for the safest and best education of all students. We have already begun with the addition of two staff members.

We welcome Mrs. Candace Berquam to our 4th grade team! She will be teaching Mr. Bogert's 4th grade face to face class and Mr. Bogert will be teaching the 4th grade online students. We want to ensure our online students have access to highly qualified staff throughout the day as much as possible. This is just one way we are continually looking to improve the instruction for ALL of our students at GW.

We also welcome Ms. Amy Pihl! She will be working with our Special Education students at GW and Torrence this year. Her knowledge will benefit our students to continue their growth and she is a great addition to our staff.

We appreciate parents being patient as we continue to learn, grow and change together with the new way of school this year. As always, please call the school with any questions or concerns.

Let's keep dancin'!

Mrs. Davis

This year KCSD has teamed up with LIFETOUCH and SHUTTERFLY to offer you a great school picture experience!! Please download the flyer for more details. Your student should have brought an order form home Friday.

Those online students wanting pictures taken may come into the school anytime 7:30-10:00 on Tuesday. Thank you!

Calling Students in Sick

In an effort to keep our school safe and students healthy, if your child is sick please let us know their symptoms when calling them into school. For example, rather than saying "sick", state "has a fever, vomiting, runny nose, sore throat". This will help our nurse be able to track students who may have COVID related symptoms.

Also, if your child is online and will not be able to login to Schoology that day, please call the school for attendance reasons. Thank you for your help!!

From Mr. Coovert

During the first two weeks of school I am talking with students about what a school counselor does and how they help students succeed at school. The presentation used can be found at the link below

Students also learned how to open their school gmail accounts as that will be one of the ways I will communicate and stay in contact with students to check on them throughout the year.

Starting in September the school counseling program will be utilizing lessons from SecondStep for Social Emotional Learning. An informational letter explaining the program will be emailed to parents. The letter also provides a website and activation code so you can create an account to learn more about SecondStep and gain access to handouts used at school. If you have any questions about SecondStep, counseling, or anything else do not hesitate to reach out. I am happy to help anyway I can.
