Mrs. Mathe's Message
Thank you to all of you that attended our Hopdaddy Spirit Day on Wednesday! I hope you had a great time and enjoyed a delicious meal! Mark your calendars; our next spirit day will be February 7th at Raising Canes on Research Forest. We hope to see you there!
On a different note, this week was the first week since the beginning of the school year that our attendance rate has been above 96% of students present every day. (96% present is equivalent to about 40 students absent) Pre-pandemic, our average daily attendance was between 97-98% of students present daily. Post pandemic, school attendance has become a big concern. While we appreciate and thank parents that keep their children home when they are truly ill, we have been noticing a trend in students missing school for an extended number of days when not ill. Some examples of reasons to keep a child home from school include a fever over 100 degrees, vomiting or diarrhea illness or if they have tested positive for COVID. More information about when to keep your child home can be found on our district health services website.
State compulsory attendance laws makes it the parent/guardian’s responsibility to monitor their child’s school attendance. State laws also require students to be in attendance for 90% of the school year to receive credit for the year (90% attendance equals less than 18 absences in a school year, or 2 absences a month). Parents can check their child's attendance records at any time through the Parent Access Center (PAC).
Studies show that missing just two days a month of school―for any reason― can be a problem for kids in a number of ways. Children who are chronically absent in kindergarten and first grade are less likely to read on grade level by the third grade. For older students, being chronically absent is strongly associated with failing at school―even more than low grades or test scores. When absences add up, these students are more likely to be suspended and drop out of high school. Chronic absenteeism is also linked with teen substance use, as well as poor health as adults. While some of these statistics may not seem to pertain to your young children now, habits are formed at a young age. Set great habits now to help your child be successful in the future.
We want to work with you and your child in laying the educational foundation for a bright and
successful future. Attendance at school is an integral part of that success. Please let us know if you need help with your child's attendance.
The video below is produced by the organization Attendance Works. Check it out for more information about why attendance matters.
