COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS
Misconceptions and errors may result if students don’t understand how the size of a unit relates to the number of units needed to measure a length. Errors may also result if students:
- assume the larger/longer a unit is, the more that are needed to measure a length.
- think inches are smaller/shorter than centimeters.
- confuse units (e.g., inches with centimeters or feet with yards).
- misalign the ruler or use the wrong ruler when measuring a length.
TEACHING FOCUS
Deepening Understanding
Encourage students to deepen their understanding of measuring lengths with different units by finding multiple ways to measure and compare lengths with different units.
REVIEW THE TEST QUESTIONS
Check to see if there were any test questions the majority of this group missed. If so, review these and discuss the errors. The video below will show you how to find their test results and access the test questions.

RECOMMENDED LESSONS
This group may be ready to move on from this standard. If you still see some skill gaps, use content from the grade level lesson below to work on them before moving into more project-based math activities.
Grade 2, Lesson 18
Review content from this grade level lesson if needed.
New Standard or PBL Activities?
Once you are confident these students do not need any additional teaching on this standard, you have a couple of options.
Assess a New Standard
- Choose another critical or important standard that is not already in our RTI plan
- Complete the Standards Mastery Request Form to get it scheduled
Project-Based Math Application Activities
- The following links will take you to collections of great 3-Act Tasks and other activities that require students to apply a number of math skills in collaborative problem-solving.
- Find an activity you and your kids will love!!
