The Civil Rights Movement: Grassroots Perspectives
This institute is designed by a collaborative team of scholars, veterans, and educators from Duke University, the SNCC Legacy Project (collaborators on the SNCC Digital Gateway), and Teaching for Change. Participants will learn the bottom-up history of the Civil Rights Movement and receive resources and strategies to bring it home to their students, so that they can see themselves in this history. Teachers will have the unique opportunity to learn from people who were key organizers in the Civil Rights Movement, and from leading scholars of that era. Teachers will receive a stipend of $2,700 in order to defray expenses.

Message from Melissa
As I was driving to work today, I realized Spring Break is only two months away! (Trying to stay positive... being kind of a "glass is half full" kind of person.)
There was a very timely article in the paper about "Fake News" and the Winston-Salem Police Department. It relates to our October RC training. This article can be used in a quick five-minute discussion/reminder on why it is important to dig deeper into news stories and verify the information.
I have seen several posts on social media in the last few weeks that have been misleading or completely false. It usually only takes 1-2 minutes to check the validity. But many of us and our students read a headline and jump into "Are you kidding?" reaction mode without taking a moment to do a fact check. I have caught myself several times falling into that trap. We are a work in progress in this new age of "Fake News" and have to remind each other to take a moment to pause and investigate.
I hope you have a great week!
Melissa
