Quarterly Newsletter - Spring
Principal Letter
Dear Delcastle Families,
Today is a great day to be a Cougar! I know that it is hard to believe that spring break is over. At this point, you should have already reviewed your student’s report card. Report cards were distributed to students on Wednesday, April 10th. It is extremely important that you are aware that this was the last printed report card for the school year. Moving forward, students and parents/guardians will have to check the Home Access Center (HAC) to review the forth-marking period interim and report card. Please contact our guidance office in the event that you need assistance logging onto HAC.
When we return this week from spring break the number of school events will increase as well as the academic/career areas assessments. In addition, decisions about interviews for next year’s Co-Op positions, spring sports, dual enrollment, prom, senior recognition, and graduation are just a few of the stressors that students may be trying to work through.
According to Dr. Kate Robert (2013), there are a few things that parents can do to help their student be successful from March to the end of the school year:
1. Accept that academics will be challenging. Schoolwork is significantly more difficult between March and the end of the school year. It is recommended that you plan time for extended homework and projects. Being diligent about checking HAC and your student’s homework planner is essential to overcoming some of the academic challenges.
2. Address problems proactively. If your student is struggling, instead of getting frustrated find a way to provide what they need. For example, a potential solution for a student struggling in an academic is to have the student stay after school on Wednesday for extra help. A bus for extra help is provided at 4:00pm and 6:00pm.
3. Managing the spring activity schedule. Spring is full of extracurricular activities. Plan ahead by looking at the calendar and plotting out the commitments visually in advance. This will prevent you from getting caught off guard. The Delcastle School App is a good proactive tool for you to use. You may also want to consider following Delcastle’s school website, Facebook and Twitter pages as another method to stay informed.
Besides providing tips to help your student be successful, the rest of this newsletter contains information about upcoming events and major activities that recently occurred. It also features achievements made by students and staff.
Best Wishes,
Dr. Clifton Hayes
Principal

ACE Mentoring Program
The ACE Mentoring Awards Breakfast was held on Wednesday, March 6. Students from Delcastle, Hodgson, St. Georges and William Penn presented their design submissions during the breakfast. ACE is a national organization that Mr. Baeriswyl started in Delaware 9 years ago. The program encourages students to continue their education in architecture, construction, and engineering. Mr. Baeriswyl and volunteers from industry met with students for 16 weeks this year after school on Tuesday from 3:00pm to 5:00pm. Also, the Delcastle and Hodgson students had an opportunity to present their plans a second time for the City of Wilmington's Constitution Yards to Tom Ogden, a representative for Mayor Purzycki, at Delcastle on Thursday, March 21. He was extremely pleased with the presentations and made arrangements for the students to present their plans to Mayor Purzycki. Above is a picture of Mayor Purzycki with Delcastle and Hodgson students after their presentation on April 19.

50th Anniversary Gala
Delcastle held the 50th Anniversary Gala at The Rail on Friday, March 29. We would like to thank the planning committee for an outstanding celebration. This was an unforgettable night that celebrated our rich past, present and future. Mr. Battafarano, Mr. Bressler, Mr. Rufo, and Digital Media students created very informative videos that I believe should be shared with our Delcastle community, especially future Cougars for years to come. This special night would not have been a success without the efforts of Mr. Davis, Mrs. Denison, Mr. Hollis, Mrs. Prickett, and Mrs. Ramey. Finally, we were able to raise over $9,000 for our students in need as a result of our sponsors.
Delcastle's Pledge to End the Word
On March 6, Delcastle celebrated our commitment to sustaining an inclusive school culture by taking the Pledge To End The Word. Our school community signed the pledge to encourage the promotion of RESPECT, inclusion, acceptance and unity for all students—regardless of disability—and encourage an end to hurtful speech and bullying.
A huge thank you to all the students and staff who sported their fabulous Be the Change t-shirts and all who signed the pledge poster. We also greatly appreciate the support from everyone at Instructional Services who came over to affirm that we are a district that Choose to Include.
The Pledge To End The Word is one of several events planned by Delcastle’s Unified Club. The next big event will be Rock Your Socks. Please make it a point this week to recognize the following club members for their dedication to cultivating inclusion among their peers. Lastly, a huge thank you to Greta Humphrey and Savannah Bigelow for serving as co-advisors. Go Cougars! ~ Princilus
Congratulations Kim Taylor

Kaitlyn Campbell Travels Abroad on Carmen Twillie Ambar Sophomore Expedition
Congratulations to Kaitlyn Campbell, a Delcastle graduate, will travel abroad for Cedar Crest College's Carmen Twillie Ambar Sophomore Expedition. The Sophomore Expedition is a unique program that allows every sophomore who is in good academic and judicial standing to study abroad during spring break at no extra cost. This year's trip was to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from March 3 to March 11, 2019.
Travel, lodging and meals are paid for by an anonymous alum, minus the cost of a passport and visa and it will not cost students anything beyond their regular semester tuition, room and board, and fees.
To give students a basic understanding of the country's culture, they are required to take a semester-long class about the country. Students will be assigned one of eight itineraries based on their major which will include service learning projects, cultural visits, and team building activities.
