FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
THE GOLDEN RULE & MOVE FROM RULES TO RELATIONSHIPS
On the occasion of my first year of teaching in 1982 at the Lebanon Junior High School, my principal presented me with this classic Norman Rockwell print, "The Golden Rule." This timeless depiction of humanity hung in every classroom I taught in and every office as a school leader. It hangs in my MoASSP office today. I have made it a point through the years to remind often myself and those in my charge to, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Longtime legendary St. Louis principal, Dr. Al Burr, shared with me in the hallway during the summer MASSP Roundtable, that he was tempted to have just one rule in his school, "The Golden Rule." He also coined the phrase, "Move from rules to relationships." I have found these two phrases are two of the best leadership strategies for de-escalating emotions as you discover techniques in working with people.

CELEBRATING MISSOURI SCHOLARS 100 CLASS OF 2020
A brief discussion about re-opening schools with a different perspective on mental health concerns.
http://smhp.psych.ucla.edu/pdfdocs/calltoaction.pdf
The two pandemics ensure there will be a growing number of mental health concerns at schools (along with more learning and behavior problems). Schools will need to address all this at a time when budgets are tightening. To do so, they will need to expand their approach beyond current multi‑tiered (MTSS) thinking. This brief discusses moving forward and concludes:
We are at a societal turning point. It must be a turning point for how schools work with families and communities to address the problems and well-being of children and youth. In particular, schools must transform how they work to prevent and ameliorate the many problems experienced by too many students. There is much work to be done as public schools across the country strive to enhance equity of opportunity by meeting the needs of the many as well as the few. ~The Center for MH in Schools & Student/Learning Supports at UCLA is co-directed by Howard Adelman and Linda Taylor
MEDICAID EXPANSION AUGUST 4 VOTE
In about six weeks, Missourians will head to the polls and cast their vote to expand Medicaid or not. Some predict that there will be short-term pain for a long-term gain in the state budget—Medicaid partners with federal and state governments. According to the Missouri Budget Project, "Medicaid expansion would result in more than $100 million in state general revenue savings and new revenue for the state of Missouri. This net increase in the general revenue budget would make funds available that could be used for other priorities, including education."
MoASSP has been involved with two Zoom meetings discussing Medicaid expansion here in Missouri.
