Superintendent's Community Update
September 20, 2023
A Message from Superintendent Colleen Burns Jermain, Ed.D.
Dear Newport Schools Parents, Families, and Staff:
Happy Week 3! There is a lot going on and we are so excited about this new school year. This year we look forward to working with more families and parents, staff, and students. We have a lot of work to do and I believe there is an opportunity for everyone to participate. First and foremost, NPS is embarking on a new strategic plan and we need your help to complete our strategic planning survey. It takes about five minutes and is in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. Your answers will help guide our work to improve outcomes for all of our students and more importantly your voice will help build the school system we want for our children. Or if you do not wish to click on the link, you can also use the QR code below to participate. We appreciate the honesty of your feedback; your responses will be anonymous.
Another important opportunity to help support our schools is the new Parent Advisory Council. We want more parents/guardian input and at the same time keep everyone up to date with our initiatives and events. This is an opportunity for me to hear directly from you and for you to hear directly from me about school events and clear up any miscommunications. You can sign up to participate by emailing Cathy Nash at cathynash@npsri.net. The Parent Advisory Council will meet once a month on Thursdays at 9:30am. The first meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September 28th. The meeting will be in-person and held at the CCRI Newport Campus. Please come and join if you are able.
Finally another fun way to be involved is to please make sure to attend our school Open Houses, which begin next week (see the full schedule below). Meet your child’s teachers and principals. This meet and greet is the perfect time for you to introduce yourself to your child’s teacher, start building positive relationships, and see the school, as well as the administrators and wonderful support staff in our buildings. Our teachers and principals love speaking with parents and working together. It is also the best time to find out about the PTO and other organizations you may want to join. So make it a priority to swing by the Open Houses. It will be well worth your time and show your child your commitment to his/her school and education.
Have a great week everyone!
Sincerely,
Colleen Burns Jermain, Ed.D.

Atentamente,
Colleen Burns Jermain, Ed.D.
Superintendente de Escuelas

Attendance Matters
Attendance Matters! That’s the name of the Rhode Island Department of Education’s campaign this school year to focus everyone on the most basic step you can take to help ensure your child gets a great education . . . attending school every day. Attendance matters because research shows that students who miss even a few days of school miss out on critical learning time. Did you know that just missing a day or two of school a month can have lasting effects on learning loss? Did you know that students that have good attendance usually are students that have better academic achievement and success?
Newport Public Schools fully supports the Attendance Matters initiative, and we’re making attendance one of our absolute top priorities this school year. So I may sound like a broken record, but I’m going to keep hitting on just how important attendance, attendance, attendance is to improving outcomes for our students.
You can do your part by establishing a routine with your child. That includes a regular wakeup time, a regular get to school time, and a post school routine including homework time, a time to talk with your child about their school day, and a regular bedtime.
