Around Our School
Student Spotlight: Preston B.
by Helen Hall A. and Molly H.
We sat down with Preston B., a Second Street School eighth grader, to ask him some questions about our school. The first question we asked him was, “If you had a magic wand what would you do? "“I would definitely make the bathrooms cleaner,” answered Preston. The next question we asked was “If you were principal what would you do?” He said, “I would have more money for sports.” Preston runs cross country and plays soccer for the middle school. The third question we asked him was, “What makes a good teacher?” He responded by saying, “Having a hands on learning lesson that's fun.” Finally we asked “What is your opinion on separating advanced kids from average kids in the classroom?” He answered, “I think we should separate students based on their grade because it helps the advanced kids learn on their own level and not be slowed down by other kids.” This question has started quit a bit of conflict in the school but there is Preston’s point of view on the topic.
Barbie Bungee Q&A with Ms. Thomas
Recently, 7th graders did a really interesting STEM activity in their science class called Barbie Bungee. They hooked rubber bands to Barbie and dropped her off the stairs to see how far she would bounce. I sat down to ask Ms. Thomas more about this activity.
Q: How will this Barbie Bungee experiment affect students’ future lives?
A: Barbie Bungee is a hands-on activity that merges engineering with the scientific method to make learning the scientific method a more real-world experience. This activity also requires interpersonal communication and collaboration, so students also receive practice in effectively working with others to achieve a common goal.
Q: Do you plan to do this experiment next year?
A: Yes
Q: In past Barbie Bungee experiments have you used any different methods of teaching than you use today. If so, could you give an example?
A:No, I have not implemented different methods of teaching. I try to stick to the script and not deviate from the lesson plan, since it has already been scrutinized, dissected and tweaked from the “powers-that-be”.
Q: In the field of science education experiments are needed, is this experiment necessary for students to master their power core standards? How is it necessary?
A: This experiment is needed because it is a more innovative and enjoyable method of re-learning and exploring the steps to the scientific method than the more traditional, teacher driven, rote memorization approach. This lesson also introduces/reinforces mathematical concepts that students can experience in settings other than math class. Finally, this experiment shows students that science and math are best friends and are intertwined everywhere!
Teacher Spotlight: Mr. Thompson
Q: What is your favorite part of teaching?
A: Working with kids and helping make them be stronger academically.
Q: If you were the principal what would your first order be? A: Bring fun back to the school and its important to have rewards
Q: Why did you decide to be a teacher?
A: As a kid that grew up with very little, teachers played very important roles in my life. They disciplined me, gave me education, and loved me unconditionally.
Q: What was your favorite subject as a kid?
A: Social studies and US history.
Student and Teacher Shout Outs!
We hope to feature weekly student and teacher shout outs. Teachers can do student shout outs, and students do the teacher shout outs.
The first teacher shout out of the year is from Carlee VanHouten: “I would like to shout out Mrs.Best because of the way she is always hopeful and that she always gets through the day no matter what happens."
The first student shout out of the year is from Mrs.Thomas (7th grade). Her student shoutout was to Braylen T., Jackie M., Cheyanne G., Alexis J., Amyah R., Trinity A., and Shelby M. for working hard in their groups and being on task the entire time while doing a project together. Way to go!
Do you have a student or teacher shout out you'd like to share? Email Mrs. Gilbert at elly.gilbert2@frankfort.kyschools.us.

Dystopian Fiction
by Jaleia H.
Dystopia is a term used to describe when a society is meant to be perfect but is really horrific. In Mrs Gilbert’s 7th-8th ATLAS class, their independent reading project is to read a dystopian book and do a project on it. Here are some examples of dystopian fiction:
Anthem
Matched
Divergent
Animal Farm
The Hunger Games
Fahrenheit 451
Brave New World
1984
The Giver
Those are all examples of dystopian fiction that multiple students are reading or have already read. If you have heard of these stories or even read them, imagine if you were a character in the story. How would you survive, stand up for what you believe or play a role in the evil dystopia?

A Review of Netflix's take on To All the Boys I Loved Before
In last week's issue, I did a review of the book To All the Boys I’ve loved Before. Since then, the movie has been released. While it was a cute movie, fans of the book will be disappointed. The movie made Lara Jean and Peter’s fake relationship seem really romantic, when in the book their relationship was more if a friendship. They also made it seem like Peter has always liked Lara Jean, and in the book he began to like her later. In the book, Lara Jean loves to bake and uses it as a stress relief tactic. The movie only includes her baking one time. The movie also makes it seem like John Ambrose McClaren and Peter don’t know each other, but in the book they have been friends for a long time. The movie wasn’t set in Virginia either, which is an integral part in the later books. The movie was cute and if it hadn’t been based off of a book I would have loved it, but it wasn’t faithful enough to the books.

Opinion
Refusing to Recycle?
by Katie N. and Margaret W.
Recently, SSS removed recycling bins from classrooms. The newspaper team was angered by this because we believe that schools have a duty to teach a student the importance of recycling. We decided to interview the sixth grade science teacher and recycling advocate Mr. Driskell and head of The Frankfort Recycling Center, Mart Noe.
Interview with Mr. Driskell
Q: What is your opinion about the recycling bins being removed?
A: Awful! This is supposed to be a place of education. In removing bins or not recycling we are not teaching kids a responsible way of taking care of our planet and future!
Q: How can we encourage students to help the environment outside of school?
A: Well. First you have to teach them what can be recycled and how to recycle. The only way to do that is by recycling in school! Hopefully then those habits can carry over to home and the community.
Q: How can we bring recycling back to the school?
A:
Get students involved (volunteers, extensions, after school)
Talk to city pick up- ways that they can help, bins that they can provide
Clean the bins up with students/volunteers
Get community involved
Let students voices be heard
At the recycling center we interviewed Mart Noe.
Q: What do you do here?
A: Here we recycle electronic scraps. There is a company in Georgetown that ships our recycle to other places. We do stream on recycling, we have a big box in Lexington that weighs around 5 tons. We only sort trash from recycle not different kinds of recycling from each other. We do an MA program which is where around 10 men go out 3 days a week and do recycling drop-offs.When we see what is recycled there are mostly water and beer bottles. We normally weigh our electronic scraps to see our records. We get around 15-16 lbs of e scraps (electronic scraps) from schools and state agencies alone per month. In our recycling pile there around 120 lbs of trash, so our recycling bins are usually mistaken for dumpsters.
Q: What do your recycling trucks do?
A: Well, our new recycling trucks are 60% more efficient than are old ones. For our old recycling trucks two people had to do the job which took around 20 seconds. Now, our trucks do the pick up job manually. Our new trucks only take around 7 seconds, and can pick up recycle for 3,000 homes per day.
The recycling dumpsters at the recycling center fill up twice a week! Although there is an average of 120 lbs of trash in that, there’s almost 2 weeks worth of cardboard included.
Recycling has a great impact on our world, recycling saves energy, resources and it protects our environment. If we recycle what should be recycled instead of throwing things away, the environment would be healthier and a lot cleaner. Since our school took away the recycling bins, we are apart of the problem. By not recycling, we increase the amount of waste in our world. The more trash and landfills we have, the more pollution we have in our environment.
Although the administration removed the recycling bins from our classrooms, there are alternative ways to promote recycling in our school. One way to do this is to start a recycling club. The recycling club will volunteer to clean up trash from the playground, classrooms, and around the schools. To summarize, we call on the administration to bring back recycling into our classrooms
Giant Pandas
Even though there are 2060 giant pandas still in the wild, these animals are at risk of being extinct. A lot of people are trying to help the animals but as the people of China keep on growing, with the giant pandas have less space to survive in the wild and their habitat will be destroyed.
Deforestation is a huge problem for all species but for the pandas it is a major problem. If we don’t come up with a solution to this problem then the pandas will become extinct. We are destroying the bamboo and the giant panda's diet is 99% bamboo, so if deforestation keeps going on then the pandas will starve to death and eventually die. Also, we are creating a problem if this keeps on happening since more carbon and greenhouse gases will enter our atmosphere.
The Gamer's Corner
A Review of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
By Anthony Parsons
If i were to rate this game out of 5 stars I would give it a 4 ½ stars. The reason I am giving it this rating is because, all in all, the gameplay and the story line is very fun and thrilling to play, Also it has a lot of unique aspects to the game such as what race ( orc, elf, etc.) you can be. You can also fight with magic and there is a skill type tree. The game becomes even more fun if you incorporate mods into your game play.
The reason I am not giving it a whole 5 stars is because in some parts of the game, you can get stuck on a quest and becomes very challenging. One of the best things about the game is it is open world so you don't have to be stuck doing the story line. You can just roam the land of Skyrim, and on the way you can get new weapons fight bosses and pick up quests on the way.
I personally think you should get Skyrim because it would be worth your time and money for the experience you will have.

Aric's Predictions for Fallout 76
To start this lovely little “expectation” of fallout 76, I want to start with what Fallout 4 SHOULD have put into their game. First, they should’ve let people be able to drive cars. Second, they should at least make the game two player to put a little more “social skills.”
Now for expectations for Fallout 76. If you did not know, Fallout 76 is going to be an online game, and you can send real people on missions, and talk to people through your systems mic. I think that you might be able to drive cars, and enjoy slightly more creativity.
