Principal's Message
Dear Valley View Parents and Families,
Happy New Year! The winter wonderland we experienced last week was a treat for my family and I hope it added to your enjoyment of the break. We are excited to have students back at Valley View.
End of 1st Semester: The final day of the first semester is January 27th. Teachers will often have final due dates for assignments and make-up tests a few days before the end of the semester, so they have enough time to get grades submitted. Students should contact their teachers well ahead of the last day of the semester if they have work that needs to be made up to ensure it gets in on time.
Safety: Thank you for keeping your children home when they are not feeling well. Due to the care you are taking, we have had very few students with COVID at Valley View this year. Please continue encouraging mask wearing with your students. With the expected statewide increase in COVID cases in January, we want to keep Valley View a safe place to learn for students and staff. We have seen the updated guidance for quarantine periods from the CDC, but the State of Washington has not updated guidance for schools yet. We will communicate updates from the state as soon as we get them.
Parking Lot: Thank you for continuing to turn right at the bottom of the parking lot when dropping off and picking up your students. It cuts down on the time people behind you are spending in line in the parking lot. A couple of our signs have disappeared on us, so we may not have a “Please Turn Right” reminder at the bottom of the parking lot.
Second Season Sports Update: WIAA guidance has changed for testing of students and coaches involved in basketball. All students and coaches, vaccinated and unvaccinated, will now need to be tested three times per week. The policy change from the WIAA is in response to outbreaks in high-risk sports at the high school level throughout Washington. The change in testing will begin this week and this process will be communicated to the boys’ basketball team and families shortly.
Clubs: A reminder that we have many after school clubs available for students to participate in. Students who are involved in clubs and sports are more likely to develop friendships with other students, have higher grades, have higher self-esteem, and graduate from high school. If you are interested in finding out more about the clubs at Valley View, please contact Assistant Principal Brenda Weyhrauch at brenda.weyhrauch@sno.wednet.edu or see the club listing in this newsletter.
Martin Luther King Jr. Assembly: We will be honoring the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr. during a virtual assembly on January 14th. We will be asking James Layman back to speak to our students. Mr. Layman is the Director of Student Leadership for the Association of Washington Student Leaders, and an uncle of one of our former students. As a reminder, there is no school on January 17th in observance of Dr. King’s birthday.
Thank you for your support as we enter the New Year. We are excited to see our students return to our snowy campus. Let us know if we have any questions.
Sincerely,
Brian Burdon

Sick?
If a student or staff member is not feeling well and has any symptoms of illness, even mild ones, please stay home. Symptoms could include cough, sore throat, fever, fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, or loss of taste or smell. One symptom is enough to warrant staying home as a precaution. We know it can be frustrating to stay home with mild symptoms. Children get sniffles, a cough, or upset stomach from time to time, and this is usually not cause for alarm. But this pandemic is the time for extra caution, and all students and staff should stay home even if symptoms are mild. If a student or staff member with symptoms does go to school, or if they start having symptoms while they are at school, expect they will be isolated and sent home as soon as possible. This means an ill student would likely be asked to wait in a dedicated room where they are not near others until a parent/guardian arrives to take them home. Students who are ill or are symptomatic should be picked up within 30 minutes of parents/guardians being contacted.
Class A symptoms:
- Fever (defined as subjective or 100.4 F or higher)
- Cough
- Chills
- Loss of sense of taste and/or smell
- Shortness of breath/difficulty breathing
or
Class B symptoms:
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Muscle or body aches
- Sore throat
- Congestion or runny nose
- Nausea or vomiting
- Diarrhea (defined as 2 or more loose stool in 24 hours)
Upon returning home
The information in this section only pertains to those individuals who are not a confirmed close contact of someone who has tested positive for COVID-19:
- If the student or staff member is tested for COVID-19 (physician-, lab-, pharmacy- or clinic-confirmed test) and the results are negative, they may return to school once their symptoms have improved, and they’ve been fever-free for at least 24 hours. Anyone with symptoms is encouraged to get tested.
- If a student or staff member has symptoms but is not tested for COVID-19, they must remain home according to the timelines below and at least 24 hours after fever is gone and symptoms have improved:
- 1 class A symptom of any duration = 10-day quarantine
- 2 class B symptoms of any duration = 10-day quarantine
- 1 class B symptom lasting more than 24 hours = 10-day quarantine
- Those who have symptoms but have not tested for COVID-19 and are not close contacts of someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, may obtain a medical professional’s note clearing them for return. The medical professional’s note must be based on the individual’s established medical history or must include an alternative lab-confirmed diagnosis.
Welcome back volunteers!
To volunteer in our schools/campuses, please complete the following online form. This form must be completed every two years. For the safety of our students, volunteer applicants must undergo a Washington State Patrol background check before beginning service. Volunteers will also need to present a valid state vaccination card for COVID-19 to the school administrator and follow the school’s volunteer process. Schools may need to monitor and limit the number of volunteers in a building to meet the state COVID-19 guidelines for social distancing. Parent/guardians are welcome to volunteer from home by assisting teachers remotely.
Volunteers who have completed the background application and showed proof of COVID-19 vaccination will be required to:
- Sign in at the school main office
- Present proper state ID
- Maintain 6-foot social distancing
- Wear a proper fitting mask/face covering
- Follow all school and district COVID-19 protocols and procedures
- Stay home if experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms

Updated Guidelines: All athletes, coaches, and managers must be tested 3 times a week
Please read the important message below for athletes this season:
To maintain the health and safety of our athletes, the Governor’s Office and Washington State Department of Health have developed additional protocols beyond masking and social distancing which will allow “high-risk indoor sports” to take place this winter. In order to compete, all basketball players and wrestlers, including those who are vaccinated must engage in COVID testing three times a week as outlined in the safety guidance developed by the Governor’s Office and Washington State Department of Health.
To support athletes, their families, and our community, our middle and high schools will be offering free rapid antigen testing to our wrestlers and basketball players. These COVID-19 tests will provide an extra measure of safety during practice and contests.
The test is a self-collected nasal swab, which the individual inserts less than one inch into the nostril. Individuals will receive results from the test in 15 minutes. Our school administrators, coaches and assistant coaches have been trained to observe the specimen collection and result the test. At this time, our district is using the BinaxNOW COVID–19 (manufactured by Abbott) rapid antigen tests.
In order to administer the rapid antigen tests, the state has mandated an online recording mechanism through a tool called SimpleReport. As part of the testing process, parents/guardians of athletes must enroll in the online registration tool at this link https://simplereport.gov/register/7X3HQ prior to testing. Athletes ages 18 and older can complete the registration process on their own. This online registration must be completed in order for our schools to administer the rapid antigen testing. In completing the online registration, parents/guardians or athletes (if ages 18 and older) will provide consent for this type of testing. All information will be maintained by the Washington State Department for Health and is strictly confidential.
Anyone who tests positive will be sent home immediately to isolate. Positive results will be communicated to the Washington State Department of Health and the Snohomish Health District. Any athlete who has symptoms or is a known close-contact to a person who tested positive for COVID-19 should stay home and not attend practice or contest.
The health and safety of our athletes, their families, and our entire community is important to us. We are excited to offer free COVID-19 rapid testing as one extra layer of safety to our middle and high school athletes.

Did you order Spirit Wear?
Thank you to families who ordered Spirit Wear – we love your school spirit! For families who requested their Spirit Wear orders be sent to the school, we regret that we are not able to do school delivery this year. These orders should be available for pick-up at the Streamline building at 1910 Bickford Ave Suite H, Snohomish. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes! To fix this problem for the future, Streamline will be removing the ‘deliver to school’ option. If you have questions about your order, please contact Streamline at 360-243-3949 or veronica@streamline-llc.net.
You can contribute photos to our yearbook.
