I am a Dutch Award winning mosaic artist and have been making mosaics for almost 15 years on all kind of surfaces and using different materials: bathroom floors, garden sculptures, functional and decorative mosaics, 2D and 3D mosaics ( trophy Heads, sold in more than 8 different countries around the world) and Fine Art mosaic.
There have been exhibitions of my work in various countries in Europe and South Africa. Very recently my work was chosen for the Western Cape Handmade Collection and exhibited at the Design Indaba 2013 in Cape Town.
I am the author of a Dutch Arts and Craftsbook “Wereldhandvaardigheid” and my mosaic work is featured in several books: Mastering Mosaics , The Mosaic yearbook and Mosaic Madness.
Mosaic projects for charity are also part of my activities and I have initiated two very succesfull projects in London (2010) and Nepal (2011).
I studied Arts and Crafts ( teacher) and Recreation Art Therapy in the Netherlands, attended over the years a diversity of Mosaic Master Courses in Italy, and have been teaching in the UK, Switzerland and South Africa to students (children, teenagers, adults, men and women,) of all levels.
My classes are not only very creative and inspire-ing but they are also therapeutic, and relaxing. My purpose is to bring out the Artist in you. Above all we have lots of fun and special moments. You will leave the course with new skills, ideas and inspiration , and with lots of newfound or fired up passion for this beautiful Art.
About my Workshops
We will work on 20 by 20 cm boards, on which you can experiment with various mosaic-materials, try out new techniques, laying of the tiles and composition, color coordinations and more.
Each of your board will be an unique experience. Together it will be your piece of Art.
I will show you how to find inspiration for your abstract design, as well as your colour-palette for the mosaic, in the surroundings of our beautiful location in the medieval village of Castel Rigone.
We will look at examples of how to get to a design and discuss this through my own mosaics. Then i will each you all there is to know about the cutting technique, laying of the tiles( andamento) , the grouting process and much more and will provide handouts and make pictures of the process which we can later analyse.
You will be guided through the project from beginning to end and I will be on hand for questions and advice during this process.
You have the option to incorporate my colour full handmade glass-fusions, I will also bring local minerals from Africa, glass beads and other specials at additional costs. You are free to bring your own special beads, old jewellery and other little nic- nacs you wish to use in the mosaics. You can also bring your own favourite nippers if you have one.( or I will supply one)
In addition to the construction of mosaics you will have the opportunity to visit the amazing mosaic park by Mosaic artist, Niki de St Phalle.
This is a wonderful opportunity and an experience which will stay with you for ever!

The Location
"I was so taken by this splendid vision that I never forgot it and it has become the star or, at least, the setting for most of my paintings, my beautiful Trasimeno."
Gerardo Dottori
Softly rolling hills on the borders of Umbria and Tuscany. The marriage of two magnificent regions on the banks of the serene Lago Trasimeno. Beautiful in itself but also in a strategic location to visit some of the most beautiful art cities of central Italy. Perugia, Assisi, Cortona, Gubbio, Siena, Florence, Arezzo, Orvieto and Rome.
Here are hill-top towns steeped in history, in culture, in art and cuisine.
Here are some of the most beautiful landscapes you will ever witness.
Here are warm, convivial people who still meet in the piazzas to chat and spend time together.
Here are beautiful trails and paths crisscrossing woods and hills with breathtaking views.
Here time stands still .....
You will fall in love and never forget!

The magical region of Trasimeno!
'Not Just a Painting Holiday'
Hi! I'm Judi and my company, 'Not Just a Painting Holiday' organises Art, Culture and Cuisine Holidays in the beautiful Trasimeno area of Italy.
I fell in love with this region when my father brought me here over thirty years ago and now share a house in Castel Rigone with my husband Michael.
It is an exquisite area steeped in history and art, with amazing views, warm and friendly people, delicious food and wine and wonderful festas!
As the name of the company suggests, my holidays provide not just incredible tuition from highly acclaimed artists but also the opportunity to experience the 'real' Italy as I did so many years ago with my father, away from tourists in our quiet, medieval village. You will have the opportunity to enjoy private wine tastings, cookery lessons and excursions. Wonderful walks, amazing sunsets. To dine in my favourite restaurants. To feel 'part' of the community.
I also look forward to you visiting our house for welcome drinks on your first day. It is a rustic house characteristic of a medieval village such as ours and very small, so a good opportunity for us all to get to know each other!
I will do my utmost to ensure that your week with us is one that you will remember for ever and you leave having re-kindled and developed your creativity and feeling as passionate about this magical region as I do!
Participents will enjoy the serene exclusive accommodation of 'Relais La Fattoria' in the enchanting medieval village of Castel Rigone, high in the rolling hills above Lake Trasimeno. (see location tab on menu).
