Elm Class Update
New York News Compass
We Missed You Anabell
All week the Elm Class sent wishes of health and healing to Anabell because we missed her. We are looking forward to seeing her again this week.
Fun in the Gym
On a cold and snowy Monday, all of First Grade brought our recess equipment into the gym for some exercise and game time. We all enjoyed the time to run and move when it is icy outside.
Books by the Elm Class
Many first graders published their narrative stories and added them to our class library. Many students enjoy choosing their classmate's books during reading times.
Publishing and sharing books allows for authors to take pride in their writing and consider their audience when revising their work. We are looking forward to adding more books by the Elm Class throughout the year.
How to Books
We are currently writing "How-To" books. As a part of this unit, students are also reading non-fiction texts. Ansel noticed that he had a "How-To"book in his book bag and inspired the class to read the book. Some first graders chose to follow the steps in the book and create ginger bread men during exploration.
Art Show!
This week we celebrated all the art students created during Studio in a School lessons.
The Elm Class partnered with kindergarteners in the Oak room to examine our sculptures and make observational sketches.
Now that we have held our art show, students can take home their work to share with family members.
Math Game
This week the Elm Class worked on solving subtraction number stories and learned a math game focused on subtraction skills.
You can play Counter Subtract at home as well. Consider using household items such as bottle caps or pennies in place of counters.
Rekenreks
This week we began a new routine during math workshop.
First Graders practiced using reckenreks to represent number values.
We practiced sharing various ways to represent numbers on this math tool and many students chose the rekenrek to show their thinking when solving number stories.
