Talk, talk, talk about books!
Did you know reading just 20 minutes a day exposes your child to about 1.8 million words per year? Reading helps students develop a stronger vocabulary, and students who read for pleasure average higher grades in English, mathematics, science, and history! Reading is a fundamental skill that we all use every single day. We read newspapers, books, directions, text messages, recipes, emails, safety warnings…Reading is everywhere! It’s no secret that developing proficient reading skills from a young age is essential not only for academic success, but for success in all areas and stages of life! Spending time with your little one talking about books, writing about books, and sharing books over and over enrich your child's reading and writing skills.
Here are a few helpful tips:
- Make reading part of every day, even for just a few minutes.
- Have fun.
- Talk about the pictures. You do not have to read the book to tell a story.
- Let your child turn the pages.
- Run your finger along the words as you read them.
- Silly sounds, especially animal sounds, are fun to make.
- Ask questions about the story. What do you think will happen next? What is this?
- Let your child retell the story.
Congratulations!
