Center Township Weekly Update
January 27, 2023
Greeting CT Families & Friends!
Old Man Winter definitely made an appearance this week giving us freezing temperatures and a snow day. Adults may have had a less than enthusiastic view of this weather, but students and teachers are fully embracing the fun and excitement snow brings. Snowmen and other winter themed activities are showing up all over the school. The background art this week is courtesy of second graders creating and painting colorful mittens in art class with Mrs. Wilson. These mittens are also on display in Center Court.
The Sweet Sounds of Music
Instrumental music lessons returned to Center Township Elementary School this fall for the first time in many years. When the Middle School closed last spring the band and orchestra programs shifted to the elementary schools. Fourth and fifth grade students had the opportunity in September to select an instrument and sign up for weekly lessons. They have been learning and practicing in small groups with their instructors for a few months. There are more than 100 students participating in the instrumental music program at CT.
Banding Together
This week the band students came together for the first time as a group in the gym. The first song that this large group of budding musicians played was Hot Cross Buns. The band sounded amazing, the expression of astonishment on the faces of the students said it all!
Tuning In
The orchestra ensemble also came together for the first time this week. After practicing on their own and taking lessons in small groups the students picked up their bows together and tuned their strings. It was amazing how well the fourth and fifth graders played together after only a few months of lessons.
“Snow Day”
Kindergartens in Mrs. Sidorchuk’s room had their own “snow day” today at school. The book, There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Snow, provided the theme for the day’s learning and activities. Story sequencing as well as snow related math activities really captivated the students. The students enjoyed learning about relaxation techniques with the “Chill and Relax” lesson facilitated by Mrs. Wisniewski, our school counselor. Special visitors rounded out the day to help the students “chill” - therapy dog buddies put a smile on everyone’s face.
Too Cute to "Resist"
Mrs. Karenbauer’s kindergartens are hard at work with their Heart Resist Art project in Mrs. Wilson’s art room. Resist art is a technique that uses a medium, in this case a paper heart, to block the paint that is being applied. Once the paint is dry, the paper hearts will be peeled back to reveal the unpainted paper heart area surrounded by paint. The students can’t wait to see their final masterpieces.
