Tanglen Update

September 9, 2022

A Message from Principal Jim Hebeisen

This week we continued to learn expectations and procedures in addition to increasing our time spent on academics. Your children are off to a great start! During our fire drill yesterday, students set the record for the fastest start of the school year drill and did it by following our expectations to stay calm and quiet. They were true STARS!

This month, we are focusing on INTEGRITY. This character strength reminds us to "Do the right thing...even if no one is watching." During our fire drill the students did a wonderful job of acting with integrity. Keep your eyes open and point out to students examples of integrity when you see them.

Student Nutrition changes for the 2022-23 School Year

The USDA has determined that school meals will NOT be free for all students for the 2022-23 school year. Therefore, a meal benefit application is required to obtain free or reduced meals. Meal applications for the 2022-23 school year are available on the Nutrition page in the Free Meals & Food Assistance tab. You can also find breakfast and lunch menus and pricing for paid meals on your child’s school website.

Although lunch is no longer free, a reimbursable USDA FREE BREAKFAST is available for all students at L.H. Tanglen Elementary School this year.

Please encourage a healthy start to the day with a FREE nutritious breakfast to fuel our students' brains.

COVID Guidance for 2022-23

Hopkins Public Schools follows the guidance of the Minnesota Department of Health/CDC in its response to COVID-19. In the 2022-23 school year, Hopkins will continue to require five-day minimum isolation for those who test positive for COVID. Mask wearing is recommended but not required in our buildings or on the bus. Please check our COVID Hub on our website for the latest information on COVID-19 and our current response.

Social-Emotional Learning Survey September 21 - October 5

In accordance with our school board policy 520, we are sending notification to all parents of any surveying their child is taking part in at school. Building our social-emotional learning skills is an important goal for our school this year. We will be asking for your 3rd-6th grade child to reflect on their own mindsets and approaches to learning via an online survey they will be completed at school in their homerooms. (We will be asking teachers to reflect with children in grades K-2). The survey content will ask students to self-reflect on social and emotional competencies that align with the Hopkins graduate traits outlined in the district's strategic plan (e.g., sense of belonging and rigorous expectations).
We are asking that all our students participate in the surveys. If a student doesn’t feel like they have enough information to answer a question, they can skip the item altogether. The responses to these surveys will be completely confidential. We are partnering with a third-party vendor to support us in administering these surveys. If you have any questions about the SEL survey or would like information about opting out, please don’t hesitate to contact us. You may also choose to opt your student out of this survey no later than September 19.
