Spain Park High School 11/15/19
A Message from the Principal
Dear Parents,
As we move closer to the Thanksgiving Holidays, I would like to remind you that this would be an excellent time to check on your student's academic progress. Yesterday the 2nd nine-week progress reports were given to your students. Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact the teacher directly. The last day of instruction for this semester is Friday, December 13, review day will be Monday, December 16, and exams will start on Tuesday, December 17. Click here for the Exam Schedule.
Every student at Spain Park will have the opportunity to learn how to create a program using computer code during our Hour of Code activities at Spain Park. Students will participate during AO on Wednesday, November 20, via live stream. We will also feature contests for students' coding efforts and trivia contests for students to learn more about Computer Science. Thanks to our PTSO and local donors for providing prizes for our participants. AO classrooms will be competing by completing the coding activities, answering trivia questions, and participating in coding and robot competitions during the live stream.
Digital Literacy and Computer Science standards were adopted statewide, and we want our students to experience these standards in a hands-on way!
Fall college visits to Spain Park are wrapping up this week. We have been fortunate to have some great schools visit with our students throughout this semester. Among those schools were nearly every college in our state and schools such as the United States Naval Academy, Florida A&M, Wash U., Yale, Vanderbilt, Tuskegee, UGA, RPI, Case Western Reserve, Pomona, Emory, Wofford, Villanova, Johns Hopkins, Young Harris, NYU and many others. We are fortunate to be at a school that is nationally recognized for academic excellence.
I'm very proud of our students who choose to give back to our community and to those who are less fortunate. The Cool 2 Be Kind (C2BK) Club is hosting a food drive from November 18 - December 10, benefiting the Food Bank of Central Alabama. The grade that brings in the most food wins a hot chocolate party before exam week. See below for the class level donations and a list of accepted items. Another great program to tell you about is our Spanish Club and Spanish Classes, who participated in a service project to collect footed pajamas for children in Mexico. All pajamas are being sent to Sueños y Esperanzas, an orphanage for abused children in Jalisco, Mexico. On Wednesday, students participated in a Skype conversation with the children at an orphanage. Our Spanish 1 students, as well as native/heritage speakers, had fun talking with the children about their names, ages, favorite school subjects, and more! In the end, our students were able to "present" the pajamas they have collected. The director will be sending pictures. So far, we have collected 52 pairs of pajamas and are still expecting more donations to come in next week.
We are proud of our students, our faculty and staff, and we thank you for allowing us the privilege to educate your children.
As always, I am available to hear your feedback on how we can make SPHS a great place to be.
Respectfully,
Peter L. Giangrosso
