SHS Counselor's Monthly Newsletter

December 2020

Dear Sturgeon High School Families,

I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving. This year looked different for most, but I hope you still have found some joy during the Holiday season. December is a busy month at Sturgeon High School with the end of the semester nearing. I recently started creating short virtual lessons about career, academic, and social-emotional topics for students to watch. So far in the past week or so I have shared information about graduation requirements, effective study spaces, navigating remote learning, and the importance of self-care. I have been sharing these on each grade levels counseling google classroom. I have also added the links to the bottom of this newsletter.

I am glad to hear that many of you found this newsletter helpful. I hope to continue to share content that is relevant and useful to our families.

Grade Level Information

Class of 2021

First semester senior meetings are coming to a close. If I have not met with your student, please have them reach out to me to schedule a meeting.

This month I planned to visit each grade to work on Missouri Connections. This is easier done in person, so I have moved this to next semester when we return to in-seat learning. Each student has a username and password. During these class meetings I will have them explore interests, career clusters, occupations, schools, and learn more about the cost of living. I look forward to helping them explore their interests and turn those interests into real-life plans.

Please continue to look for new scholarships added to the Google Sheet. I have added a lot of new scholarships throughout the past few weeks.

Also, if your student is interested in retaking the ACT, please see the link below for registration dates and deadlines.

At the end of the semester I will send out A+ Scholarship Program progress letters to each student discussing each student's GPA, attendance, and other A+ eligibility information.

If your student is needing additional help with academic and career planning, please let me know.

Financial Aid Information

Check-out the FAFSA Category on this page for handouts.

Class of 2022

Due to remote learning being extended through 1st semester, the ASVAB has been rescheduled. The Juniors will take the ASVAB on January 8, 2021. Please see the letter below for more information. I will email this letter out to students, as well. Please let me know if you have any questions. This assessment is a great way for students to learn more about their career interests.

Juniors will be taking the ACT in the Spring at Sturgeon High School. There will be more details in the future.

I am missing A+ documents from many students establishing that they are participating in the program. If you are unsure if your student is needing to return A+ documents, please reach out and I can let you know what I am missing. This information will also be noted on their letter.

A+ Tutors

During remote learning students are able to tutor siblings or family members they may be watching during remote learning to continue to log hours. Additionally, A+ Tutors are encouraged to contact their A+ Teacher to make a plan to join class zoom meetings to continue to help students as a way to log hours, too.

Dual Credit Students

Enrollment for 2nd semester dual credit classes with MACC will be on January 13, 2021. This will be held via zoom at the high school. I will send out enrollment papers to be completed in the future. Second Semester begins on January 12, 2021.
