We Believe in students exceeding our expectations
This Week at NBES
In grade six, students worked on estimating products and quotients. Students are working hard to persevere and make sense of problems without giving up. I was able to listen to amazing stories written by our own six grade students
In second grade, students began working on building stamina for writing. All students work quietly, stay in one spot, write the whole time, and get started right away! Today in Ms. Sullivan's class they were shooting for 8 minutes:)! Students also worked on finding the sum in math and subtracting numbers!
In first grade, students are finding the sum of 2 dice! They also problem solved using numbers to find the same sum. Students worked with 10 frames to add 1 or 2 more. They also played an awesome math game called Fall to Frames which challenged them to add more or subtract less. In ELA, they learned the Eagle Eye strategy to look at the picture first before reading.
In kindergarten, the students worked on the expectations for being an effective reader. Strategies, such as, read to self and sharing back the wonderful ideas they came across throughout their reading. They continued to increase their reading stamina and started the process for writers workshop this week. I was able to see a few covers that were almost finished. My personal favorite part was taking a quick motion break before reading that had us all up and dancing!
In grade 4, multiplication was the name of the game. Students used colored tactiles to create multiplication shapes. They began webbing and using colors to make visualizing the aspects of a paragraph, main ideas, details, and clinching thoughts, easier to identify. Best of all, many of the students were able to share their reading with me and really dig deep into the reasons they decided this was a just right book. They used to be very hesitant to share their ideas, but now they are excited and proud.
Our grade three students showed off how their hearts filled with ideas will allow them to overcome moments of writers block when they are in writers workshop. The students had many great ideas and their stories were amazing to read. I was able to discuss many books with them and why they choose them. Several students have finished their first or second book of the year and were happy to tell me about it. Junie B. Jones is a real favorite, but honestly it is not surprising due to the comfortable reading spots they have.
In our special,s the students began playing soccer, with so many stations and situations, it added significantly to an already exciting time and an awesome spaceship game that included a hula hoop and music! In art, students finished up their people collage. I have to say the most surprising moment of the week came as I walked past the band room and heard the echoes of holiday songs being played and performed by our kids. It is hard to believe that a week ago it was 90 degrees and this week the halls rang of bells and the joys of winter.
