Parent Tiger Talk
October 2019
Happy Autumn!
October 2019
Recently, I had a chance to attend the Superintendent Fall Conference in Madison. The conference opened with three powerful speakers sharing a similar message:
- Governor Tony Evers spoke of the critical need for legislators to “improve the lived experience for children and families in Wisconsin noting raising achievement requires work beyond the walls of our school”.
State Superintendent Carolyn Stanford Taylor affirmed “educators don’t own the gap, there are many variables, however schools are uniquely positioned to create partnerships focused on equity and rigor”; and
Harvard Professor Dr. Karen L. Mapp confirmed “educators must know their students and be humble as they partner with families to understand each student’s individual and unique life situation”.
Dr. Karen Mapp highlighted the importance of schools partnering with parents pointing out the impact on students includes: have faster rates of literacy development; receive higher grades and test scores; enter higher level programs; promote more and earn more credits; adapt better to school and attend more; and have better social skills and behavior.
Have a wonderful week!
