Fulton Science Academy
EXCELLENCE, INNOVATION, CHARACTER
Week of September 18, 2017
PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Dear Students, Faculty, and Parents,
First, I am happy to see that everyone is safe and sound after the missed days last week due to bad weather from Hurricane Irma! I know that we were all happy to get back to school and to see everyone once things were safe. The week before last, we had some exciting events going on here at FSA such as the New Parent Welcome Breakfast and Grandparents Day! We were also happy to host about 120 Hurricane Irma evacuees from Florida for dinner at our school on September 10.
FSA Mustang Support Organization and the school administration would like to thank all of the parents who attended the New Parent Welcome Breakfast! It was a wonderful way to start the morning and a good time for everyone to meet each other and learn more about the school, our administration, and most importantly, about our parents that make FSA such a rich and inviting place to be! I also want to say how wonderful it was to see our students with their grandparents on Sunday for National Grandparents Day! At Fulton Science Academy, we know the important role that grandparents play in our student's lives. This is why we enjoy celebrating our grandparents here at FSA alongside their grandchildren. We had an amazing afternoon this past Sunday spent showing our grandparents around the school, having a luncheon, and enjoying their company! Please see pictures of these events below.
ROBOTICS TEAM WON STEAM TRAILBLAZER AWARD FROM ALPHARETTA TECHNOLOGY COMMISSION
I would also like to congratulate our female robotics team Ctrl+Alt+Delete, who won the STEAM Trailblazer Award last Thursday at the Alpharetta Technology Commission's Annual Technology Dinner! To learn more about this amazing win, please see the post below!
FSA GIRLS VARSITY VOLLEYBALL TEAM WON FOUR OUT OF SIX GAMES SO FAR!
I would like to congratulate to our Varsity Volleyball Team for their most recent win today. It is wonderful to see that we have won four of the six games we played so far this season. Amazing achivement considering this is our first year in varsity volleyball. Way to go!
WELCOME BACK PICNICS
We have organized two, start-of-year picnics for our faculty and families to celebrate the beginning of an exciting new school year. Back by popular demand, our teachers will prepare delicious barbecue chicken, hot dogs, and salad. We kindly ask our parents to bring either desserts or veggie dishes.
- Saturday, September 23, Welcome Picnic Pre-K - 4th 6:00 pm- 7:30 pm
- Sunday, September 24, Welcome Picnic 5th- High School 6:00- 7:30 pm
DISMISSAL INFORMATION
In an attempt to create a smooth and safe process for all students, we have been evaluating our dismissal procedures and have decided to make a few more adjustments. We believe that these adjustments will provide you a better carpool experience.
For ALL Grades
- We will continue to have no early pick up between 3:00 pm and 3:30 pm.
- No students will be called from clubs as it disrupts the learning environment. It is the duty of parents to inform their children ahead of time so that students can be in the cafeteria but not in the club if needed.
- Please be reminded that no parents are allowed to park in front of the school at any time. Parents should always park in designated parking areas but not in front of the school.
Pre-K & Kindergarten
- There is no change for Pre-K. There is a slight change for kindergarten only during first dismissal and kindergarten teachers will announce it.
Elementary Grades
- Good news! We no longer have 3rd dismissal for elementary families.
- 3rd dismissal (4:20 to 4:30) is only for middle school families or middle school families who have siblings in elementary.
- If you missed 2nd dismissal (3:30 to 3:50), you may park your car in one of the designated parking areas (not in front of school) to pick up your child from the cafeteria using the main door by showing your dismissal card at any time.
- This is much easier for elementary parents as they no longer have to wait for 3rd dismissal if they missed 2nd dismissal. We are able to do this for elementary parents because their clubs end at 3:30 p.m.
Middle School
- Middle school parents should pick up their children either during 2nd dismissal (3:30 to 3:50) or during 3rd dismissal (4:20 to 4:30)
- If you missed 2nd dismissal (3:30 to 3:50), you may park your car in one of the designated parking areas (not in front of the school) to pick up your children from the cafeteria using the main door by showing your dismissal card till 4:00 p.m.
- After 4:00 p.m., middle school parents should go to the 3rd dismissal lane to pick up their children. The dismissal begins at 4:20 pm.
High School
- High school parents should not use the dismissal lane at all.
- You may pick-up your child at any time by simply parking at one of the school parking areas (not in front of the school) and texting your child's phone to ask him/her come to your car.

STEAM Team "Recyclables Turned to Art" Needs your Help!
Dear Students, Faculty, and Parents,
As you know we are doing a course called STEAM for grades 6-11. Students have already submitted topics, team members, and they have received their steam teachers. Our 7th grade steam group: Aileen H. Sydney X. Ranjani V. Nina T. and Derek Z. need certain materials that are not easily accessible. We need donations of items like old toys, broken toys, used school materials, magazines, old books, small broken pieces of anything, small knick-knacks and trinkets that you do not want or need around your house. We also really need bottle caps. Starting this week, there are boxes in the Cafeteria and by the Front Desk where students can drop off their donations. They are at the entrance right where they walk in first thing in the morning before they are released to their lockers and right by the trophy cabinet in the Lobby. There are multiple boxes, each labeled by category. All students need to do is bring in their donation(s), drop it off in one of the bins and one of the students from our team will come by at the end of each week and collect the materials. Note that they don’t have to be a specific color, shape, or size. Anything that you would easily throw away you can donate. Thank you for your participation!
STEAM Trailblazer Award for ctrl+alt+delete
We would like to thank ATC for supporting young women in robotics and team "Control + Alt + Delete," winner of this year's STEAM Trailblazer Award. The team members, including coach Kaya, said it was an incredible evening and we appreciate all ATC do for our city's booming technology sector.

FSA Cares for a Cure
It is with great pride that we invite our fellow parents, FSA students, and our incredible faculty to please join together for a noble cause.
Please see a video of last year's campaign here:
Currently, our school lobby is a sea of yellow, including 11 festive yellow jars that symbolize CURE's signature color. These jars are waiting to be filled with coins! Each jar represents a grade (high school grades will work together.) As the jars are filled, weekly totals will be tallied with the help of our students and results will be updated on our school's brand new "Care-o-Meter" visible outside the cafeteria and in the carpool pick up area.
To invite some well-spirited competition, the grade that fills their jar with the most money will win a prize at the end of the month. Classes in grades Pre-K -- 4th will compete for prizes as well as classes in 5th grade - high school.
In addition to the jars, we have set up a secure online giving portal where families, relatives, businesses, or any Mustang supporter can make a gift to support the "Coins for a Cure" outreach initiative.
To donate online, please click this link: https://donate.fultonscienceacademy.org/give/106177?amount=null#!/donation/checkout
They say that charity begins at home, and I imagine that your children will start by asking you, perhaps daily, for spare change to fill their jars. I implore you to please inspire our students to look outside our homes and school, and to empower them to become active PERSONAL fundraisers by asking for community support to help us exceed our goal of $10,000.00.
By reaching out into our neighborhoods and local communities, we achieve more than just a higher total for charity... we have the opportunity to show the community what wonderful, service-minded students we have at FSA.
All of the time spent raising money for this cause will count towards service hours for your child! In order to be successful, the kids need the full support of the parents and faculty! Room parents, please reach out to your teachers and ask how you can help. Teachers, please take some time to discuss with your student and ask them for their ideas.
Please send any photos you take of your children supporting CURE through their philanthropic efforts to smelton@fultonscienceacademy.org so that we can share these images with CURE and some of the local families whose children are fighting cancer right now.

Character Ed Trait for September is Self Control
Self-Control is “knowing you can, but deciding you won’t”.
Controlling your body and words can be difficult when you are feeling emotional. Having self-control means you are able to act in an calm way, when your impulse is to react emotionally. Self- Control also means staying quiet, when you wish you speak. This character trait is one of the most difficult to master, because it requires managing your behavior.
-Mrs. Cantrell
Home Visits - A Fun Way to meet your teachers!
Home visits are a casual way for your child to spend time with his/her teacher in the comfort of their home. Teachers enjoy having a chance to see children in this comfortable environment, doing whatever makes them most happy and spend time with children and their parents outside of a regular school day.
Simply email junal@fultonscienceacademy.org with some suggested dates/times, as well as your students' name(s) and homeroom assignments. Ms. Unal will be in touch to confirm final details.
