LSES Weekly Update

Exceptional things happen here!

Week of May 16-20

A peek into 2nd grade...

Second graders are writing a fiction story about the creation of land formations. Some students are in the final stages of the writing process. They are editing their stories and typing up their final draft on laptops while learning how to use a computer keyboard. Students have been making dioramas that represent in 3-D what their stories are about. They are creating scenes from their stories by painting mountains, rivers, and forests. Thanks to Target for donating the shoe boxes for this project.

Around the School

  • On April 28, families and friends came out to see the hard work that our students have been putting in to their science fair projects. Students were able to look through microscopes, play interactive games, and show off their projects.
  • Last Tuesday, in partnership with the LDS church, we opened the Paw Pantry. If your family needs a little extra food, the Paw Pantry will be open every Tuesday from 1:45PM-2:00PM. If you are unable to come to the school during those times, fill out and return the green flyer that came home last week, or call (503)844-1160 and leave your information with the office. We will deliver a bag of food to your child's class for them to bring home. The church also hosted a free yard sale last weekend for LSES families. Families were able to go to the "sale" and pick out anything they wanted to take home. Best of all - everything was free of charge. We really appreciate how our adoptive church takes care of Lincoln Street families!
  • This past Wednesday, Family University (FAMU) began. We have some great classes this session including English or Spanish, Parenting with Love and Logic, Seed to Table Gardening, computer literacy, and an exercise class. If you are interested in any of these classes, there is still time to sign up. Applications are in the office. A light dinner is served at 5:30PM and classes begin at 6:00PM.

Art Night

Students and teachers have been working hard on their Right Brain Initiative clay projects. During her residency, Karie Oakes worked with students in every classroom to design and construct their very own clay creations. Each grade level has a different theme to explore that relates to what they are learning about in class. We are so excited to see the finished projects emerging from the Lincoln Street kiln! Students projects are at various stages, but they should all be done in time for Art Night. You can come check out your student's clay project at Art Night on Friday, June 19 from 5:00PM-7:00PM. There will be a taco dinner to begin the night and then families can explore art from each class.
