Starling: Hope For The Humanities
A Return To Romanticism
What Are You Searching For?
Since the last episode, the world has changed. I've taken some time to indulge my philosophical leaning and fell into Romanticism and the work of William Blake and Nietzsche. As I have been in isolation I have spent time considering how we may have received an invitation to return to existential considerations and move back towards harder questions connected to the human condition.
You can listen in at the link below to my musings about Romanticism, William Blake, Nietzsche and taking this moment to move past entertainment, and even past meaning to have experience again.

Age of Enlightenment
I spent most of the episode talking about Romanticism but that arose from The Enlightenment. If you are curious about that period check out links below.

Below you will find a video on his printing process, and links to more information in his work and ideas.
The image you see featured here is the one I mentioned in the episode called, The Ancient of Days Setting A Compass ToThe Earth. It is his illustration of Urizen.

Suggested Practices:
For practice around reconnecting to your experience…I will keep these simple.
- Stay with your feelings
- Do not numb yourself, allow the process to unfold through you
- How have you limited your senses, can you stop numbing yourself? Why have you numbed yourself? What have you not wanted to feel?
- Remember the last time you had a truly aesthetic experience. A moment that took your breath away…don’t give it a meaning. Just remember the feelings that arose. Consider how you would convey that in a work of art
- Cook a meal, enjoy a song, dance, read a book, watch a movie that makes you cry, feel into your life and enjoy the experience…even if it is scary.
- These are scary times, care for yourself…a long bubble bath is always a great way to relax.
- Maybe do a bit of your own research into the Romantic movement, I will give you some links to get you started in the show notes this week. Links to painters and poets and philosophy.
Playlist:
I threw in a range of music here, including some music from the New Romantic movement from the late 70s/early 80s. I tried to create an ebb and flow of feelings evoked through the music.
