LAJH Guidance News

March 2019

The month of March hosts numerous observances and promotes awareness covering a multitude of worthy causes. Our newsletter will focus on a few notable areas such as Self Harm Awareness, Irish American Heritage, and Women’s History Month. Before reading about the aforementioned topics, take a moment to look at other celebrations also held in the month of March.

☘️ Self-Harm Awareness Month

Self-Harm is a difficult topic to talk about and it is important that parents know how to help adolescents who are struggling with handling their emotions appropriately. Each year, one in five girls and one in seven boys engage in self-injurious behavior. Approximately 90 percent of individuals who engage in self-harm, do so during their teen and pre-teen years. Experts suggest that those who self-harm require non-judgemental support and consistent treatment.

☘️ Irish American Heritage Month

During the month of March in the United States, Americans recognize the contributions of Irish-Americans. The heritage month was first celebrated in 1991, and is in March to coincide with Saint Patrick's Day, the Irish national holiday on March 17. From the founding fathers to innovative transportation, arts and culture, Irish immigrants for generations left deep roots in the American landscape. Learn more about Famous Irish Americans from

☘️ Women’s History Month

“From the first settlers who came to our shores, from the first American Indian families who befriended them, men and women have worked together to build this nation. Too often the women were unsung and sometimes their contributions went unnoticed. But the achievements, leadership, courage, strength and love of the women who built America was as vital as that of the men whose names we know so well...” President Jimmy Carter.

Each year women from Florida are recognized for their amazing contributions to our society. Learn more about Florida Women’s Hall of Fame!

It’s almost that time of year for students to begin taking the Florida Standards Assessments. All students at LAJH will take their first FSA Writing Assessment on April 2nd (7th Grade) or April 3rd (8th Grade). Please make sure that your child is in attendance on testing days, or your child may not receive a score for a particular subject for the current school year. FSA scores are used to help with the placement of students into standard, advanced, and remedial core classes for the next or upcoming school year.
