Mrs. Abernethy's News
First Grade 2016-2017
This Week
This week we will be reviewing class procedures. We have had a small problem with excessive talking and being off task. Please talk with your child about this at home.
Reading: We will continue working on the format of Reader's Workshop. We are going to be talking about working with partners and reviewing the beginning, middle and end of stories with our partners. We will also begin talking about how we take a sneak peak of our stories and figure out tough words using pictures.
Math: We will be working on putting numbers in order from least to greatest, and greatest to least. We will focus on place value to do this. We will also be working on counting to 120. Please practice counting with your child at home! You can do that easily in the car or at dinner. It's important that your child has the rote routine of counting down so they can put it to use counting objects and ordering numbers.
Writing: We will continue writing our small moment stories. We will also be using our sketches to help us write our stories. We will be focusing on stretching out those small moments into a beginning, middle, and end of a story. Finally we will also work on writing those hard words by stretching out the sounds.
Social Studies: We will be talking about bullying and how to be good friends.
