Lady Trojans Complete Unbeaten Regular Season: On to the Playoffs!
Last Friday, the Trojans were at a wet and cold Ellison Field for Senior Night. After a slow start, the Trojans turned up the heat in the second half, eventually running away from Napa 6-1. It was a great way to celebrate Senior Night. (see some of the pictures below)
Earlier that week, Petaluma went on the road at Casa in a showdown game. In a hard fought battle, they came away with a 2-1 win, essentially sealing up the league pennant. (See the report on this game below.)
Now, the current #1 ranked squad in NCS Division 3 will wait to hear who they'll face in the first round of the NCS. Congratulation on an awesome season, Trojans! Coach Babala and staff are just as proud!
Poetry Out Loud!
This month, students participated in the Poetry Out Loud competition here at Petaluma High. Poetry Out Loud encourages students to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation. This program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life. Since 2005, Poetry Out Loud has grown to reach more than 3 million students and 50,000 teachers from 10,000 schools in every state, Washington, DC, the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico."
Our PHS Honors English 9 students worked with local poet and Poetry Out Loud coach Sandra Anfang and teacher Krista O'Connor to memorize and perform a poem during in-class competitions. Last week, nine students - Julia Barufkin, Emma Churchill, Sabrina Fiorica, Cadence Larson, Jacqueline Mattox, Mauricio Mejia Pagola, Drake Newell, Zachary Scholnick and Mia Sun - were finalists and presented to an audience. Of this group, Mia Sun won the competition and will represent Petaluma High at the county-level competition on Monday, February 11, 2019 at Santa Rosa's Central Library at 6 pm. If you are able to attend that evening, your support and encouragement would be greatly appreciated.
Top three in the final school-wide competition on 1/30 were:
First place: Hui Wen (Mia) Sun
Runner-up 1: Emma Churchill
Runner-up 2: Drake Newell

Our AcDec Stars!
PHS Team Shines at Academic Decathlon 2019 NorthBay Regional
Petaluma High raised their level this year as our academic sharpshooters competed at the North Bay Regional AcDec competition in Fairfield last Saturday. Thirteen schools competed, answering questions around the theme of the 1960s. The day was long, but the team did very well. They earned individual medals in nine of the ten test subjects. In the team SuperQuiz, PHS placed 3rd, besting Casa for the first time. Overall, our school finished 4th. We are awaiting scores to see if we performed well enough to earn an at large spot for the state championship.
Team members: Anna Demma, Madison Fisher, Sam Gearhard, Libby Greenlief, Harmony Jensen, Jessica Lechon, Harrison Saunders, Ava Schafbuch, Sean Schumikowski, Ethan Shahbazian, Stephanos Sideris, and Isaac Ulmer. Congratulations to our Super Coach, Mr. Aja, and to Ms. Jackson for her terrific support with Literature.

Basketball Update
Both girls and boys varsity closed out the regular season against Sonoma Valley Monday night. The boys enjoyed Senior Night activities last Friday versus Napa (see pictures below). Though down big early on, the Trojan boys showed a lot of heart closing to within four in the final minute before eventually giving way to the Grizzlies. The young Trojans finished their season at Sonoma. They competed all the way, coming back from a 10 point deficit with a huge three pointer by Robbie Isetta to tie things up late. Then George Tynes appeared to hit the game winner with 8 seconds to go. Unfortunately, Sonoma managed to tie it up at the buzzer, then went on to 49-48 win in overtime. The Trojans (6-19) could easily be in double digits in wins but for four buzzer beater and overtime losses. Congratulations to all these Trojans on a hard fought season!
The girls, coming off their huge win versus Casa in Ed Iacoppi Gym (see story below), closed out their regular season campaign versus Sonoma at home on Senior Night Monday (see pictures below). The T-Girls quickly established themselves as the better team, eventually winning 56-22. The defense was particularly strong, holing the Dragons to just 7 second half points. The T-Girls were led by Sheriene Arikat's 15 points and 10 boards. Kassidy Bacon also had a strong night with 9 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 steals. Our three seniors - Kassidy, Lilly Catarozoli, and Kaileigh Pate - all had strong games to finish the season. The Trojans have an outside chance of making the NCS field but we will have to wait and see. Congratulations to Coach Ratshin and all the PHS T-Girl families!

AP/Honors Night - February 21st at 6PM in the Multi + AP Exam Update
As our second semester keeps rolling along, we are happy to send out some early reminders for our AP families and those who may be interested in learning more about AP and Honors courses at PHS.
February 21st is our AP/Honors Night. This night is dedicated to inform students and parents about the AP and Honors courses offered at PHS. It is important for all of our students to go to these meetings as they will learn about expectations, summer assignments and much more from the instructor.
Attached you will find the schedule in English and Spanish. Also, you will find the AP/Honors agreement. This document is due March 8th for all students who plan to take an AP or Honors course during the 2019-2020 school year.
AP testing is scheduled for the weeks of May 7 - May 18th. At this point, your student should have brought home a two sided letter. (See Attached Item) This letter notifies the student and parents of the 2018-2019 AP testing window, the cost for each test and a selection of tests your student can take. Students were instructed to review this document and use it when selecting their exams.
The date for submitting AP registration forms is March 8th. We encourage all students who are planning to do the AP test to get their payments in ASAP to avoid any late fee's or missed opportunities. Please see a counselor for further information or for scholarship information.
Attached you will find the letter that was given to students in December. If needed, you can print this document or your student can get a new copy in the Student Assistance Center.
