Raider Update
A Weekly eNewsletter from Hastings Public Schools
Message from the Superintendent
Even though Groundhog Day predicted six more weeks of winter, I know that February and the conclusion of Snow Week shifts many thoughts to spring break - March 14-18. We have seen a significant drop in COVID cases, particularly at the two secondary buildings, which is great timing for the board's COVID discussion at the work session on Wednesday. If you haven't done so already, please make a note that February 18th and May 9th will now be asynchronous learning days, with specific information coming from buildings and teachers.
The 14-day county rate fell to 300.8 while the district rate fell to 271.2. Our building numbers for the week were:
HS - 4 students, 2 staff MS - 7 students, 0 staff KEL - 7 students, 3 staff MEL - 3 students, 2 staff PEL - 6 students, 1 staff Tilden - 3 students, 0 staff
The recent tragedies of a shooting resulting in student death and injury outside of a school in Richfield and a student death by suicide in Stillwater are reminders for us all to be vigilant in collectively watching out for our students. If you have concerns about student safety, please do not hesitate to reach out to our building administrators or counseling staff.
Bob McDowell, Ed.D.

McKinney Vento Act
Do you or someone you know lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence?
Are you struggling to make ends meet and cannot pay your utility bills?
Are you staying with friends/family due to economic hardship?
Students might be eligible for the McKinney-Vento Act, which provides rights and services to children and unaccompanied youth experiencing a housing crisis, homelessness, or housing insecurity. This includes those who are: sharing the housing of others due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason; staying in motels or campgrounds due to the lack of an adequate alternative; staying in shelters or transitional housing; or sleeping in cars, parks, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, or similar settings.
One of the priorities of the act is the provision of transportation services to allow students experiencing housing insecurity or homelessness to remain in their school of origin, which is defined as the school that the student attended when they first experienced the housing crisis.
