Geography

Major Landforms-
Here are some major landforms in the southwest: The Grand Canyon is located in Arizona; the Great Plains are located in all of the southwest regions; and the Colorado Plateau is located in Western Colorado, Northern New Mexico, Eastern Utah and Northern Arizona.

Major Bodies Of Water-
There are four major bodies of water in the Southwest. First is the Colorado river, which is located in the Grand Canyon. Second is the Gulf of Mexico, which borders Texas. Third is the Great Salt Lake, which is located in Utah. Finally the Rio Grande is a river that runs through Colorado, New Mexico, and the length of Texas and empties into the Gulf Of Mexico.

Names of the states and popular cities-
Arizona- Phoenix, Tucson Mesa, Glendale and Scottsdale
Texas- Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin and El Paso
New Mexico- Albuquerque, Las Cruces, Santa Fe, Rio Rancho, and Roswell
Oklahoma- Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Norman, Lawton and Broken Arrow

The Climate of the southwest region
The average temperature in the summer is over 100 degrees. In the winter the temperature varies. It can go anywhere from the 30s at night to a high of 70 during the day. The average rainfall is 12 to 16 inches a year.

Economy Notes

Major Crops-
Many crops are grown in the Southwest. The main ones are potatoes, garlic, cherry tomatoes, bulb onions, slicing tomatoes, carrots, summer squash and snow/snap peas.

Resources-
Here are some resources in the Southwest Region: lumber, silver, oil, borax, gold, gas, coal, copper, potash, and solar.

Products-
Some of the products found in the Southwest region are coal, copper, natural gas, gold, oil, silver, salt and uranium. These are produced in all of the Southwest states.

Employment-
Many jobs are available in the Southwest. A few of the most common ones are fishing, farming, tourism, mining, trading done with Mexico and military jobs.

Grand Canyon

What is it-
The Grand Canyon is spectacular gorge with the Colorado river that runs through it. The Grand Canyon is 277 miles long and 6,000 feet deep.

Where is it-
The Grand Canyon is located in Northern Arizona.

Why is it important-
It was one of the first country's National Park. An event that went on at the Grand Canyon was that Nik Wallenda walked across the 'Little Grand Canyon" on a tightrope.

Why is it interesting-
People go there to hike, bike, water raft, fish horseback ride, backpack go on helicopter rides and museum tours.

Taos Pueblo

What is it?
The Taos Pueblo is an ancient pueblo belonging to a Tiwa speaking Native-American tribe of pueblo people. It is approximately 1000 years old.

Where is it?
It is located in New Mexico. It attracts 5716 people a year.

Why is it interesting?
People visit the Taos Pueblo for many reasons. Some people like the area for backpacking and hiking. Others like the history which includes National monuments and the Church at Ranchos De Taos. This church is a beautiful adobe church. The final reason people like to visit is because of the trendy town. It has a lot of good food, music and great stores.
