Welcome, Winter Break!
Some students didn't miss a beat this fall, but for many students, the semester was an uphill climb all the way. New modes of learning and unexpected changes may have hurt their academic confidence. They might be nervous about having to do it all again in a few weeks. While it's tempting to put this semester away and never think of it again, there is great value in taking stock of this experience to prepare for spring.
What went well?
What strategies for studying and time management worked well? How did your student surprise themselves with what they were capable of? What new friendships and activities got them excited about college? Reflecting on the positives and growth that occurred puts them in the mindset to prepare for the next question...
What could improve?
A new semester is a clean slate. How do we learn from what didn't go so well? What new tools and habits should we start now? If time and task management were difficult, what kind of calendar system would help? If socializing was hard, what is one club they will join in January? What accountability tools do they need to meet their goals?
How can this long break be an asset?
Winter break is long this year -- plenty of time to rest, enjoy the holidays fully, AND do some self-care and development. There are many opportunities between now and mid-January for students to work on themselves, not only for academic success, but for lifelong wellbeing and skills.
Counseling Services is offering a series of workshops and groups for students to find support and develop their coping skills. Workshop topics include:
- Managing Stress and Anxiety
- Time Management Skills
- Academic Confidence
- Managing Panic Attacks
- Meditation and Mindfulness
Students can sign up for the workshops by calling Counseling Services at 478-445-5331. Visit https://www.gcsu.edu/campus-life/winter-break-2020-campus-life to see all of the opportunities for students to stay engaged over an extended winter break.

How does it work?
- Students with a meal plan can use one of their daily "swipes" at a retail dining location instead of The MAX.
- The value of a swipe is $6.69.
- Students can choose the mealtime to use their swipe, Monday-Friday.
- Don't forget about CatCash! Students can use their Bobcat Card as a debit card. Reload funds any time conveniently online.
