Want to begin or continue the process for GATE Certification? Is it time to recertify? Looking for some new ideas to challenge all students? This is for you!
Requirements for Certification
To become GATE certified at PUSD, teachers must participate in 30 hours of professional development and lesson development. The goal is to not only receive researched based strategies in meeting the needs of gifted and talented learners, but also to apply these strategies in current practice. Once certified, teachers must update their certification (re-certify) every 3 years. If teachers have missed two rounds (6 years) of re-certification, they must “restart” by attending 30 hours of PD.
Recertification options (if within 6 years):
Differentiation 201, or
Any topic specific module
Certification or recertification (if more than 6 years have passed):
Attend Differentiation 101 module
Choose 3 additional modules to attend throughout the school year
Hours include PD, coaching, planning and reflection
Upon completion, you may receive two (2) salary credits

- Module 3: Igniting Readers and Writers workshop for gifted students: Jan 15, Jan 29, Feb 5, 3:45 - 5:45
- Module 4: Digging for depth and complexity in STEM: Feb 12, Feb 26, Mar 5, 3:45 - 5:45
- Differentiation 201 (recertification only): April 9, 16, 23, 3:45 - 5:45

Differentiation 201: How might we deepen our application of depth, complexity, novelty and acceleration in our current practice? Explore and apply a scope and sequence for GATE differentiation that parallels your current content while layering in researched best practices for GATE learners.These sessions will be inquiry based and responsive to the needs and interests of the participants.

Module 3: Igniting Readers and Writers Workshop for Gifted Students
The groups are levelled, isn’t that enough?
How might I include interest based independent study in workshop?
What does conferencing look like for my advanced writers?
Integrate strategies for guided reading and daily 5 to meet the needs, interests, and abilities of diverse learners.
Module 4: Digging for depth and complexity in STEM
How does “3 dimensional learning” in the NGSS parallel with the GATE standards?
Explore the use of critical and creative thinking skills as tools for differentiation and problem solving, and develop rigorous science and math experiences.
Integrate concept mapping and science notebooking techniques as differentiated assessment tools
