Elementary Office Update
Greetings NC Elementary Families,
I hope this email finds your family well and enjoying the warm up that we are having today. You know you live in Wisconsin when 24 degrees feels wonderful. I wanted to take the time to reach out and share few updates.
Elementary Literacy Curriculum
A team of elementary teaching staff has been working since last spring as part of our Elementary Literacy Committee. We have spent a significant amount of time reading research about literacy best practices and current brain research on how children best learn to read. Given our new learning and the availability of more strongly aligned curriculum - the team worked through the process of reviewing different options. The team brought forward a recommendation to the school board on 2/17/2021. The board approved the adoption of Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) curriculum in grades K-5. The program is based around the Science of Reading. It's key components include systematic phonics instruction, engaging background knowledge building units, and strong writing instruction components. We look forward to sharing more about CKLA with our families and collaborating together to support your children. (See video below of overview!) I am so excited for our school to be on this journey and can't wait to see the student growth and engagement in the fun thematic units.
The school board meeting yesterday included a look at the instructional programing at North Crawford. The board did not make any shifts for the Elementary.
