The Lance
May 11-15
The mission of Lakeshore Middle School is to promote collaboration between educators, students, and families to foster engaged learners and active and compassionate
members of their community.
Reflections from Mr. Swegles
Here's to all the moms out there who are teaching great life lessons to your children by having your actions support your words. Our kids are watching and I know that they have some great women in their life they are looking up to. Lancer Love to all of you!
Attention 8th grade parents:
The students in the 8th grade Language Arts classes are creating a personal time capsule that will be delivered to them in May of their senior year. Would you like to surprise your child with a letter in the time capsule? Letters may be written by parents, grandparents, siblings, etc. The content of the letter is up to you, but the students will reflect on the following categories in their writing: me, my world, people in my life, my past, what I do, my future. You can mail your letter to Lakeshore Middle School with attention to Laura Veldman. Please be sure to include your student’s first and last name in the letter. This is an optional activity to enrich the project, but we know your child will appreciate reading your writing. The letter should be mailed to LMS by the time school starts next fall. Thank you for your cooperation in this project.
Course Scheduling (updated May 11)
The class of 2025 (7th grade) was sent a digital application for potential placement into Language 8+ for the 2020-21 school year. Discuss with them their desire or intent to apply for the course. There is a written response that they will need to spend some time on and, if accepted, there is a summer work that will be required.
Student Check Ins
In our conversations with teachers, our numbers seem to be consistent with previous weeks or improving. If there are extraneous circumstances taking place, please, reach out to myself or your child's TEAM of teachers to inform them. If you need assistance with anything, please, do not hesitate to ask.

Upcoming Dates and Events
Lunch Dates
I invited your children to have lunch with me this week via Zoom.
6th: Wednesday, 11:30
7th: Thursday, 11:30
8th: Friday, 11:30
I've asked them to think about this one question: What is one thing you like about remote learning that you wish we could keep if/when we get back into the building?
Belonging PIck up and Drop Off:
Ideally, we want to plan an event where we can provide students their belongings while at the same time be prepared for students to return their school-issued materials that are being returned as well. Please, be patient as we create that plan, but nothing will occur prior to May 28 due to the stay at home order.
The Positivity Project
This is our last week for character strengths. Next week we'll close out the P2 year with an Other People Matter week.
May 8-12: Other People Matter-Outro Week
- The image below lists all of the Other People Matter areas of focus that we covered this year. Each item could be a great dinner table conversation in how we have demonstrated each of these during our stay at home order.
Videos and reflection questions are posted in grade-level Google Classrooms for students to view. Additional social-emotional learning resources will be posted periodically.
