BASD Coaching Rundown

Issue #2- September 2020

BASD Virtual Learning Playbook

It’s a season unlike any other. New field, new rules. We don’t know how long it’s going to last. We’ll be learning as we go and we need to be prepared for anything. In an effort to help you begin to think about transitioning to a virtual learning environment, we have created the BASD Virtual Learning Playbook. In this newsletter, we’re releasing the first section -- Planning for Virtual Learning. Check out the link below for ideas about how to build classroom community, manage procedures, set up a virtual teaching space, and design a schedule for the virtual classroom setting. Click on this link to take you to the playbook.

Strategy Spotlight

Debriefing Emojis

We’ve shared many great instructional strategies over the years on our strategy days, but how do we transition the tried and true strategies that we love to the digital environment? In each newsletter, we will review a previously shared strategy and share ideas for how to use it in the time of COVID-19.

This month’s featured strategy, Debriefing Emojis, is a great tool for helping students reflect on their learning. We attached the corresponding documents we shared a few years ago below. While you can certainly still use them (with sanitization measures in mind, of course), we’ve come up with a few ways to adapt the strategy to the virtual classroom setting. Watch this brief video to learn more:

Professional Learning Opportunities

Internal Trade Time Opportunities

There are a number of upcoming professional learning sessions being offered within the district. Need trade time hours? Consider participating in any of the following sessions:

September BASD Twitter Chat (aka PL in your PJ's)

Antiracist Book Club

Time: 3:30-4:30 PM

Location: Option to attend in person at the HS or join virtually in Google Meets

Description: In the words of Angela Davis, "In a racist society, it is not enough to be non-racist, we must be anti-racist." In this series of sessions, participants will read a book with an anti-racist theme and discuss the implications for the classroom setting. Participants will select a book to read from this list and acquire their own copy of their book prior to the first session. Check out info about the session and sign up here.

Note: We know afternoon sessions aren’t always favorable. We’re open to potentially offering a second evening session if there is enough interest. If you’re interested in participating, but could only make an evening time work, send us an email and we’ll see what we can do.

External Trade Time Opportunities

Don’t forget that in addition to district-sponsored professional learning sessions, you also have the opportunity to explore sessions on your own. For this year only, we will be permitted to acquire all 6 hours virtually, if we so choose. Check out the following virtual webinars if you’re interested. Don’t forget to submit the required paperwork for approval!

NCTM 100 Days of Professional Learning: NCTM has archived all webinars that were hosted over the summer. The webinars focused on a variety of topics and grade levels. If you want to learn more about math, there is probably a webinar here about it!

Corwin Monday Webinar Series and Other Webinars- FREE! If you can’t attend live, sign up for the session and you will be emailed a video of the webinar a few days after it takes place.

Professional Magazines

Educational Leadership offers a monthly magazine with articles based around a variety of educational topics. September's issue focuses on Grading. Check out the table of contents and let Jackie know if you would like a copy of any of the articles.

NCTM Research Magazine shares recent research articles on the topic of mathematics education. Check out the table of contents for September’s issue and let Melissa know if you would like a copy of any of the articles.

Digital Toolkit: Digital Notebook Templates

We created our BASD Virtual Playbook using a digital notebook. Digital notebooks are created using Google slides and they are an easy way to organize information. The embedded hyperlinks make it easy to navigate. Many teachers are using the templates to have their students create their own digital notebooks. The best part is that the templates can be adapted to fit any grade or content. We’ve gathered a bunch of resources and samples of notebooks and created a Digital Notebook shared folder. Take a look and use what you'd like!!!
