A Message from Mrs. Vietri
Dear Caln Families,
I hope this message finds you enjoying your summer. We have been busy at Caln preparing for the start of the 2022-2023 school year! Our first day of school is August 29th! Staff can't wait to see you there! School Communications will be sent throughout the summer, so be sure to check your email!
I want to share that my final day within the district will be July 22nd. The district is working through the interview and hiring process to find another Principal for Caln Elementary School to lead the amazing students and staff!
Summer can be the best time of year to spend quality time with family and friends, while finding great books to read! To maintain your reading growth, research states that it is critical to read during the summer. Pick up a good book, read on a trip, outdoors, or in a cozy location. Once you finish a book, don't forget to take a picture and share it with us through the district's social media campaign, #CASDLovesToRead22
The district is asking students to show off the books that they love and enjoy all summer long. For additional information, click the button below!
We can't wait to hear about all the summer reading you are enjoying!
Kind Regards,
Mrs. Vietri
Summer Reading for Students Entering Grade 6:
The district is requiring all students entering grade 6 to complete a required summer reading assignment. Each student is being asked to read one book from their grade-specific list and complete a follow up activity (one-pager). The assignment will be graded.
The reading list aligns with the first thematic unit in 6th grade (Resilience in the Great Depression) to help build background knowledge and support comprehension. Students will be given the summer reading assignment in class during the week of 5/23. E-book and/or audio versions of several of the texts will be available for free via Mackin Library.
A hard copy of the assignment will be given to each student and will be posted to the district website (see Educational Services tab).
Lexia Summer Challenge
One District, One Book: Kick-Off July 11th
One District, One Book is set to kick-off on July 11th. Every elementary family was given a copy of The BFG by Ronald Dahl. If your family did not receive a copy of the book, please reach out to your child's home school.
We are asking families to follow the attached reading schedule. Families that participate are invited to participate in weekly trivia events through Kahoot (www.kahoot.com).
These events are noted on the attached schedule. The game pin will be sent out via School Messenger (via text and email) 15 minutes prior to the start of the game. In addition, families that participate are also invited to a family movie night on August 4th. We will be viewing Disney's version of The BFG. The movie night will be at Rainbow Elementary School and will begin at 7pm. The event will be free for all, and refreshments will be provided. A form will be sent out two weeks prior to the event. Don't forget to sign up!
Students in grades K-5 are encouraged to meet their weekly unit target on Lexia this summer to help maintain/improve their literacy skills. Students that meet their weekly unit target 6 times over the summer will receive a prize when they return in the fall.
Almost 50 students logged on this week! While that is amazing, we need to get that number up! For help logging on, please see the attached flyer.
In addition to the Lexia Challenge, the district is also sponsoring a social media campaign, #CASDLovesToRead22. We want our students to show off the books that they love all summer long. Tag us on social media!
Students entering grade 6 were given a required summer reading assignment. Assignments can be found on the district website by clicking the Summer Reading icon on the district homepage or the link below. Students can access titles from the recommended list through MackinVIA, an online library.
