Description
Cystic fibrosis, or CF, is an inherited disease of the secretory glands. Secretory glands include gland that make mucus and sweat.
Causes & Complications
- This birth defect can be "inherited" by two faulty genes for the disease - one from each parent.
- It mainly affects the lungs, pancreas, liver, intestines, sinuses, and sex organs.
- Some of the complications are: wheezing, breathlessness, a decreased ability of exercise, a persistent cough that produces thick spit and mucus.
How to treat defect? Life Outlook?
- Early treatment can improve your quality of life and increase your life span.
- Treatments may include nutritional and respiratory therapies, medicines, exercise, and other treatments.
- Cystic fibrosis is a lifelong condition. With improved treatment there has been a dramatic increase in the survival of people with cystic fibrosis over a period of 20 years or so.
Prevention
- Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disorder that cannot be prevented. But there are many things you can do to help your child live a happy and healthy life.
