Principal's Message

Kia ora Whaanau,

Last Friday we had our first positive behaviour day for the year. Positive behaviour day is a collective reward for all the students. Students earn clicks on their waka cards (bit like a coffee card) for showing the expected behaviours and when their card is full they hand it in which earns them house points. When 500 cards are handed in the students earn a free activity afternoon and sausage sizzle. These afternoons are a showcase of what being an area school is all about with students of all year levels mixing and participating in activities like jump jam, basketball, chess, coding etc. It was a great way to end the week.

On Tuesday we had our teacher only day for NCEA changes and local curriculum. We started the day with the staff all learning our waiata for special occasions and then we broke off into Year 1-8 and NCEA. The Year 1-8 worked on collaborative planning and local curriculum overviews, while the high school teachers looked at the new numeracy and literacy standards and did their own work around their subjects and the new standards.

On Saturday the 28th May the Onewhero Domain group are having a planting afternoon to plant daffodil bulbs in the gardens around the domain. It is a great chance to support our community so come along with weather appropriate clothing, a water bottle, and towel/gardening gloves if you have them. We will be meeting at 2:30pm outside the junior rugby club for a health and safety briefing.

With winter on the doorstep COVID, 'flu, and colds are around. Our staff have been continuing to do visual wellbeing checks each morning. Students who are sick should stay home so that we can reduce the spread of illness in the community.

Lastly, our new staff member for Year 7-8 will be with us shortly (30th May). Tehillah Smith will be taking on the Year 1-8 Pastoral Dean role as well as teaching in Room 12. A big thank you to Mr Rowe who has been amazing stepping in to cover the teaching in Room 12. We are extremely fortunate to have Mr Rowe who has ensured that the learning continued over this period.

Ngaa mihi,

Rebecca Bills

Dandelions and Dragonflies

The Childcare and Early Learning Centre on the school grounds has now been fully renovated. We’ve extended the operating hours and are now open Mon-Fri from 7:30am-5:30pm. We’ve also been through all the licencing requirements to now be able to provide spaces for babies for the first time, so we can cater from 3 month olds through to 5 year olds. We’ve also installed a Commercial Kitchen and hired a Qualified Chef to provide nutritious meals to children for the first time.
