A Message from Suzanne, Our Art Studio Teacher
Dear First Grade Families, April 12, 2018
I hope this finds you well! The Maple families generously collected and donated money to the visual art studio in honor of Campbell’s (Maple Teacher) mother’s passing. Doris C. Kennedy, was a wonderful artist and mother to Campbell and his family. In her honor, each first grade family will receive a bag of art supplies to create a painting at home with your child and an adult.
Each bag contains:
A canvas
Acrylic paint
Brushes
A palette
Two reproductions of Mrs. Kennedy’s Paintings
Directions for home :
Look at and discuss Doris’ artwork. Students will be exposed to her work and the idea of creating artwork with a family member in the visual art studio.
Using the materials in the bag and any other materials you may wish, create a painting together.
Return the only painting to school by Monday, April 23rd. You may keep all of the supplies and tools that are sent home to enjoy.
Optional: Take a few photos of your family creating together and email to Suzanne@brooklyncompass.org.
This project will be on display at the upcoming Compass Gala on May 10th. Please reach out to Suzanne or your classroom teachers with any questions. Thank you so very much to the Maple Families!
Best,
Suzanne
This Week, We...
- Started looking at place value and the base ten system within 100 in Math Workshop. We grouped all of the unifix cubes in our classroom by groups of ten and then counted them all together during Work Time, focusing on skip counting by 10s.
- Started work in our new guided reading groups in Reading Workshop. Our reading skills are getting stronger!
- Became poets and songwriters in Writing Workshop. The Maples worked in poetry and song centers all week long, working with poetry collage, a listening center, a rhythm center, and a sensory center. We built vocabulary to describe our feelings and emotions, and looked closely at the work of Zoë Ryder White, Jack Prelutsky, and Shel Silverstein.
- Started small group projects to end our Integrated Unit during Work Time. The Maples chose a system they wanted to investigate and started planning their work together on Friday.
- Saw Air Play, a circus-inspired show at the New Victory Theater on our Field Trip on Thursday.
- Visited Underwood Park and Fort Greene Park to enjoy the Spring weather!
