Schedule Changes and Zero Period

Last week students had the chance to request an elective change on Wednesday and Thursday. If we are able to make elective changes we will call these students in this week to make a change. In some cases we may have to rearrange their whole schedule and teachers to make the elective change work.

If there are other schedule concerns or questions, please send an email to BOTH Mrs. Leonardo,, and myself,, and one of us will respond.

As far as zero period, we are waiting until the electives are settled this week to assign zero periods, which will hopefully start the second week of September. My fear is that we didn't receive all of the elective forms from the spring, which had students' selections. Also, some of you weren't enrolled at Kennedy. So if you want to make sure we have your request, I recommend filling out this digital form:

PE Dressing Out Starts Monday

Students received their PE locker on block day last week, which is where they can store their PE clothes. Tomorrow they will begin dressing out for PE, which is part of their participation grade. I understand that some items are back ordered, so teachers have a list of these students. If for some reason you still haven't purchased PE clothes you can still do so online,, or bring in the form with payment. Students are only required to have the Kennedy PE shirt, which is $10. All other items are optional. Instead of the Kennedy PE shorts or sweats students can wear their own black bottoms.

If your student hasn't purchased a lock, we will continue to sell those on Monday ($5 for new ones and $2 for used ones) in the office. The lock can be used for all three years at Kennedy. It needs to be one of ours so we can help the students' open them if they lose the combination.

If the shirt/lock is an absolute financial hardship, please contact the Family Center or myself and we will work with you.

Thank you to Merrily Robinson and Roy Dorling, who have been working really hard to fulfill all of the orders.

Opening Assemblies

On Tuesday each grade level had its own opening assembly to go over rules and procedures and meet key staff members. I have attached the presentations below in PDF form for you to review. (I will have them translated to Spanish this week). At the end of each assembly teachers chose two students to represent their class in a Kahoot game competition that asked questions about rules and expectations. We used some of our new 70" screens that are now in each classroom and iPads to play. Congratulations to our winning classes: 6th Grade - LaPaglia, 7th Grade - Keith, 8th Grade = Reynoso.

Attendance/Appointment Procedures

If your student will be absent due to sickness or a morning appointment, please call the office first thing that morning (or leave a message the night before), 650-482-2409, so that we know your student is out. If your student is at an appointment, you when your student returns you need to come with your student into the office. Your student needs to be signed in by you and needs a pass from the office to enter class.

If your student needs to leave during the day for an appointment, you need to come into the office and sign your student out. If your student returns during the day, you need to come sign your student back in. Your student needs to get a pass from an office staff member at that time to enter class.

On block day this week, your student will take the STAR test, which is a reading and vocabulary test on the computer. This will give us a baseline of your student's reading level. We will be encouraging students to do their best and it would be great if you could echo the same message. The results will be shared with you in the next week or two so you know the results.

Kennedy Music Disney Trip - For Advanced Band and 8th Grade Advanced Orchestra Students

We will be having a parent meeting to talk about the 2020 Kennedy Music Disney Trip on Wednesday, August 28th from 7:45 pm-8:30 pm. This will take place in the Music Room (312) after the Grand Canyon Meeting and Bronstein Instrument Rental Night. At this meeting we will go over cost, itinerary, and answer any questions you might have! This is a tradition we would like to start, and want to see if the interest is there!

It is important to be in attendance because we need to find out the likeliness of making this trip happen! Please let me Mrs. Federico-Youngs know if you cannot attend, and she will make sure that you get all of the information!

Bronstein Rental Program Night

Bronstein Music Store is offering a rental program to Redwood City School District students. They will hold a Rental Program Night on Wednesday, August 28, from 6:00-7:30 P.M. at Kennedy Middle School in the Music Room at the front of the school. You must bring a credit card or a check with you to the rental sign up night in order to receive an instrument.

Newcomer Night

RCSD is hosting an evening for families whose students are new this year or last year to the United States to provide information and support. See the flier below.

PowerSchool Portal

Some of you have asked when you will receive your PowerSchool portal login information (where you can check grades, etc). This will occur after Labor Day, hopefully that Tuesday, September 3. Often there is a lot of movement the first ten days of school between schools in our district, so we would like to wait until everyone is a bit more settled to generate all of the letters with the login information.

Back To School Packet

If for some reason you never received the Kennedy back to school packet of information, I have scanned and attached them below.

Box Tops

Many products that you buy have “box tops.” Box tops can be turned into Kennedy and then we receive $.10 for each box top. This money goes towards supplies and student activities. If you have some, you are welcome to bring them to Maze Day or turn them into the office any time it is open this year. Students will also compete every other week to see which fourth period class brings in the most box tops to earn a prize. We can’t accept expired box tops unless they are from 2019.

Amazon Smile

A reminder that you can give back to Kennedy at no extra cost by using Amazon Smile when you purchase items on Amazon. Here is a link for more information:
