Principal Message

Dear St. Mary School Families,

This week while listening to one of my favorite education podcasts, the author had titled the year 2020 and it resonated with me. He titled 2020 as the "Year of the Learner" and I can't help but recognize the appropriateness of it. He titled 2020 as the "Year of the Learner" because everyone, students, teachers, principals, parents, EVERYONE, is learning new ways this year. With all of the changes, new guidelines, new recommendations, and new ways of communicating challenging students, teachers, and parents we are all learning something new and with learning new things, there are always growing pains. I thought this was an excellent reminder to give grace and understanding this year as we are all learning something new!

I want to say thank you to parents as we are now journeying through the school year in the midst of the pandemic. Please continue to let us know when your child(ren) are not feeling well as this helps us make the appropriate decisions regarding the health and safety of not only your child(re) but also the school community as a whole. However, please be diligent in doing temperature and symptoms checks each morning. These checks are two of the best proactive measures to ensure the continued health and safety of St. Mary School.

Also, it was great welcoming our preschool students this week! It is wonderful to see all of the excited and happy faces each morning. I look forward to being a guest reader and spending time with our preschool classes!

Keep up the great work with hand washing, wearing our face coverings, and social distancing. Keep working hard to keep St. Mary School safe and healthy! Hope everyone enjoys a restful weekend.

Thank you,

George Mitchell

Big picture

Final Forms - Media Release

In Final Forms, a media release form was uploaded. Please complete this form whether releasing or opting out. I would love to begin showcasing our school and students to show the great things happening at school by posting pictures on the newsletter, website, and social media! Our students are doing great things and I want to be able to share that with everyone.

Thank you!

Lunch and Recess Volunteers

We are looking for parent volunteers to assist with lunch and recess supervision. In order to be a volunteer you must have VIRTUS training and must pass a background check. If interested in volunteering, please email Mr. Mitchell, gmitchell@stmaryvermilion.org.

MAP Testing

We will be continuing MAP testing this week. We have had some issues with technology and NWEA's side, but are managing to continue along and get through testing.

The MAP Growth test is designed to identify where our students are at present for Math, Reading, and Science. Grades K-2 take only Math and Reading, grades 3-6 will take Math, Reading, ELA, and Grade 5 will also take Science. Attached below is a letter further explaining the test and how it works. Students should try to be well rested and have eaten a breakfast prior to days with testing and above all else, just be ready to try their best!

NWEA Family Tool-Kit This is a resource that provides a lot of information regarding the MAP Growth tests.

School Lunch

Attached below is the flyer that went home regarding school lunch now being free for all students. This is a venture by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to provide free and nutritious lunches for school children. Lunch will be free under this program until December 31st, 2020. Please check out the flyer for more information.

Covid-19 Acknowledgement of Risk

Every family is required to complete this form. Each student in a family is also required to sign this form and return it to school. You may scan and send back in email or drop it off in the office. This needs to be completed prior to the first day of school. If you have questions or need a copy of the form, please email George Mitchell at gmitchell@stmaryvermilion.org.

Preschool Update

AM Preschool start time will be 8:15 instead of 8:30. This is an effort to ensure we have ample time between preschool groups to sanitize the classroom.

AM Schedule - 8:15-11:15

PM Schedule - 12:30-3:30

Face Coverings - Preschool students will be required to have a face covering (mask) at school. However, they are not mandated or required to wear them throughout the day. Our preschool staff will work with our students to understand the purpose and procedure of wearing face coverings and will have the discretion to allow preschool students to not wear face coverings throughout the day. It will be highly encouraged that they wear them while moving through common areas of the school, but with the understanding of student-by-student needs with the face coverings for our preschool students. If there are any questions regarding face coverings please reach out to Mr. Mitchell at gmitchell@stmaryvermilion.org.

St. Mary School 2020-2021 Reopening Plan

Temperature and Symptoms Checks Reminder

Stated in the reopening plan were the policies regarding temperature and symptoms checks for students prior to coming to school. We are working to implement a system for parents to track those checks in order to provide the school with timely information in the event symptoms are present. Ultimately I implore you as parents to perform that temperature and symptoms checks EVERY morning in order to ensure our students, staff, and families remain safe. If the temperature is 100.0F or higher and/or Covid-19 symptoms are present (symptoms list in the plan) the student, as well as siblings, needs to remain home. Please ensure consistency with following this policy!

Masks and Hygiene

The Ohio Department of Health issued a mask mandate for all students K-12 for the 2020-2021 school year. St. Mary School will require masks in accordance with the state mandate as well as for the preschool (please reference preschool update in this newsletter for further guidance). Parents, please begin to work with your children on wearing masks properly and becoming comfortable wearing them.

Update: students may wear the gaiter scarf type face coverings, although the cloth masks are recommended.

Also, please practice proper hygiene as well. Please visit https://www.cdc.gov/handwashing/index.html for guidelines.

If there are any questions regarding face coverings, please contact Mr. Mitchell at gmitchell@stmaryvermilion.org
