Room 124 News

We are thankful for so much!

Happy Friday to You!

The last couple of weeks have absolutely flown by and there have been so many beautiful moments along the way. From creating Thanksgiving wishes for our veterans to Grandparents Luncheon to our lovely holiday many sweet memories have been made.

We have been finishing up our study of short vowels this week with short /e/ (E says "eh" like elbow!). We have practiced listening for the /e/ sound, we have found it in our reading, and we have made sure to write /e/ when we hear it! Sight word checks were done this week and first grade, as a team, has set a new goal for mastery of words. I'm very excited to see the growth in all kiddos and I will keep you posted as we make our way closer and closer to meeting the goal.

In math, we unpacked our new standard...PLACE VALUE! As a first grader, we need to be able to understand that the first digit in a two-digit number is the 'tens' and the second digit in a two-digit number is the 'ones'. This understanding will come in handy later in the year when we use place value to add and subtract with two digit numbers. We are continuing our work with addition and subtraction facts and strategies that accompany these skills. We have some new and exciting tools in our room to help us learn these too!

I also wanted to clarify the flashcards that I sent home over vacation. These cards should have been cut and kept at home. The purpose of them is to play games with your kiddo and improve automaticity is his/her facts. Please do not write the answer on each card. If your house needs more/new flashcards, please let me know and I will can send home some more!

REPORT CARDS came home this week! Please sign and return the envelopes as soon as possible! Thank you!!

Finally, we will be doing some whole grade level activities/projects in the upcoming weeks. I'm looking for three or four individuals who would be able to help out in mornings. Please send me an email if you're available. Right now, I'm looking for help on the mornings of December 15th and December 22nd.

Meet our new Math Tool

This is one of four brand new math fact handheld games that will help us with our fact practice. They seem to be a big hit as I received several thumbs up, pats on the back, and "good jobs" from our firsties! There are different levels to each game and there's even multiplication and division. The two blue rectangles are the addends and the sum is at the top. Not only will these devices allow us to find totals, but sometimes it gives us an problem where we have to solve for a missing addend!

Holiday at Hadlock

Saturday, Dec. 6th, 10am-2pm

If anyone is looking for something to do this weekend, Santa will be arriving (either via helicopter or sleigh - the elves have yet to decide!) at Hadlock Field at 11am tomorrow morning! There will be a bunch of holiday arts & crafts, hot cocoa and s'mores, and horse drawn carriage rides. This event is FREE and you might even meet Ashley, my sister!
