Academic Vocabulary Review Activities
- Draw attention to how key vocabulary words are used in various contexts. Ask students which key vocabulary words they may use when they talk to someone.
- Use the key vocabulary words throughout the lesson. Try to give students multiple examples of how they may use the vocabulary words. Ask students to give their own examples of how the vocabulary words can be used.
- Have students discuss, in a group, how the key vocabulary words are applied to daily life. Ask them about the people in the community that may use or demonstrate some of the key vocabulary words.
Formative Assessment
- At the beginning of the lesson, ask students if they know any of the key vocabulary words. Have students give an example of how some of the vocabulary words are used in various contexts.
- Observe students during the small group discussions. Listen to student dialog to decide if students in a particular group understand how to use and identify the key vocabulary words.
- Have students write a short story about a baker, cashier, scientist, or another profession that uses math in their journals. Encourage students to use the key vocabulary terms while writing.
- At the end of class, use an exit slip for students to explain how some of the key vocabulary words are used in everyday life. Ask students to write down any words they may have difficulty using. Students can also write down math-related words that may be used in their lives.
Summative Assessment
- During the group discussion, have students use key vocabulary words to create sentences about math in their lives. Have each group share some of their sentences with the class.
- At the end of the lesson, have students use each key vocabulary word in a sentence that is relevant to the activity.
- Design a “fill in the blank” homework sheet that students can take home and complete using the key vocabulary words.
Student Understanding
Students will have various opportunities to demonstrate whether or not they understand and can use the targeted vocabulary words. At the beginning of the lesson, they will have a chance to demonstrate their knowledge of the vocabulary words. During the lesson, students will be asked to create sentences and a short story using the vocabulary words. After the lesson has been completed, the key vocabulary words will be used throughout the week in other subjects, such as art, science, and social studies.
