Garden Road Parent Weekly #13
A Leader In Me School - 10/21/22
Dear Families:
Preliminary 2022 California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) results are available for our individual students and our school.
Test scores are recorded as Standards Exceeded, Standards Met, Standards Nearly Met, and Standards Not Met.
- In English language arts, an overall average of 64% of our Garden Road Elementary students met or exceeded standards on the 2022 CAASPP.
- In mathematics, an overall average of 60% of our Garden Road Elementary students met or exceeded standards on the 2022 CAASPP.
CAASPP was administered to students in grades 3-8 and grade 11 during the Spring of 2022. If your child took the CAASPP, you can access their individual results through ParentVUE. Directions for using ParentVUE are linked here. Please keep in mind that these scores are only one measure of an individual student’s learning. Data from these assessments is used as part of a broader picture of student achievement. Teachers use these results in conjunction with site and classroom assessments and observations to help tailor instruction throughout the school year.
This was the first statewide test given to California students since 2019. Following the pandemic, the 2022 test was significantly revised by the California Department of Education (CDE), providing a new baseline for school districts and sites to measure progress moving forward. Due to the significant changes in the test, districts and sites are unable to make direct comparisons with previous years’ results. However, consistent strong results are indicative of system-wide collaboration by parents, teachers, and school staff to facilitate student success. We are proud of our students and know their accomplishments are reflected in a variety of ways. CAASPP results are one measure of progress and should be reviewed alongside other learning information as well.

Library News
This week in Library, we explored how to be better Digital Citizens!
For kids, digital life is real life. It's where they build friendships, take a stand on issues, and do so much more. We want to encourage kids and families to reflect on their media habits and build digital citizenship skills with this collection of articles, videos, printable handouts, conversation starters, and more. Covering a range of topics -- from online safety to learning with technology -- this toolkit has helpful resources that you can use at home, so we are all on the same page. Please check with your student about the handout that was given from the Library & filled in class. You may lay out a plan to set limits, discuss appropriate time & content and manage expectations. Sometimes it's hard to pause and think, but this lesson would be a good reminder to do so. The older grades will get 6 lessons while the younger grades will experience 3, which will happen once a month in the Library.
Working together, schools and families can prepare kids to think critically and use technology in positive, creative, and powerful ways.
Please sign up for a free account at www.commonsensemedia.com or text the word "kids" to 21555, to get entertainment picks & tips at no cost.
For tips in Spanish, text "familia".
PS: Pumpkin Jack loves our cozy Library. He's getting soft & squishy in his sealed glass home, so we all can observe him closely. The kids showed me that he's grown half a mustache & a dark moldy spot in his back!! Eww 🙂
Schoolwide WIG Success!
Tips from the Health Office
Cold and flu season is upon us. Health officials are warning there may be high levels of influenza compared to the past two years, whenCOVID-19 precautions helped keep flu infections low.As a reminder, please do not send your child to school if they are feeling sick or experiencing symptoms of a virus. Keeping your sick child home will be a great benefit for the health and wellness of our students and staff.
The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness. Some people, such as older people, young children, and people with certain health conditions, are at high risk of serious flu complications. Symptoms of influenza can vary, but generally include a high fever, headache, chills, body aches, sore throat, and cough.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers these tips to prevent influenza:
- Get vaccinated every year
- Avoid close contact with sick people
- Frequently wash hands with soap
- Stay at home if you are experiencing flu-like symptoms
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
- Individuals with chronic health issues and/or individuals experiencing severe symptoms should be evaluated by a medical professional.
- See more prevention tips from the CDC.
The influenza vaccine is available at doctors’ offices and retail pharmacies and is covered by medical insurance. People with no health care coverage can get vaccinated at one of the County’s six public health centers or a local community clinic. To find the nearest location, visit the County’s Flu Vaccine Locations page or call 2-1-1 San Diego. The CDC recommends that everyone 6 months and older get vaccinated every year. Garden Road will continue to work with local health officials to share helpful information. Thank you for your partnership in helping us keep our students and staff healthy. If you have questions about these topics, please contact gmeadows@powayusd.com.
