Mrs. Teresa Garcia
Mrs. Garcia is a science teacher at Dryden Jr./Sr. High School. She has a Bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan-Flint, and a Masters from Marygrove College. She stated “I know nobody knows this about me...I like to watch/feed birds. I also enjoy listening to podcasts and audiobooks. I enjoy spending time with my family: my husband Wilson, my oldest daughter, Alexis (17), and my twins, Andrew and Alyson (14). I also can't forget our pets: Phineas, our Shih Tzu, and Potato, our cat!”.
When asked what she would like students to know, she stated “I have been teaching in Dryden since 1996! My husband is from Venezuela. And, contrary to popular belief, I AM NOT Mr. Anderson's mother!”. She chose Dryden because she grew up and graduated from high school in Lapeer. She liked the idea of staying close to home and teaching where she grew up. Her favorite things about Dryden are the relationships that are built. She loves it when alumni come back to see her and tell her about their accomplishments! Her words of motivation for students are “Be curious! Not everything worth learning comes from a book or from the Internet! Go outside and investigate the world!”
Students Say...
compiled by Audrey Napolitano
We sent out a Google Form with three questions for all of the students in Dryden Junior/ Senior High School about their favorite thing about Mrs. Garcia, their favorite memory with Mrs. Garcia, and the most valuable lesson they learned from Mrs. Garcia.
Keegan Byerley said that his favorite thing about Mrs. Garcia is how funny she is. His favorite memory with Mrs. Garcia is when his class conducts experiments. The most valuable thing he learned from Mrs. Garcia is about different chemicals.
Gabriel Schultz said that his favorite thing about Mrs. Garcia is how nice and helpful she is. His favorite memory with Mrs. Garcia was when Mr. Anderson introduced her as his mom. The most valuable things that she taught him was about the periodic table, electrons, and noble gasses.
Logan Romain said that his favorite thing about Mrs. Garcia is the outlet near him in her class. His favorite memory with her is when he charges his laptop in her room. The most valuable thing she taught him was to “use laptop battery wisely for 24 hour challenge”.
Liam Napolitano said that his favorite thing about Mrs. Garcia is how she likes birds. His favorite memories with Mrs. Garcia was while “serving together in the Vietnam War for 27 years”. The most valuable thing that he learned from Mrs. Garcia is to study BEFORE tests.
Gabreal Covey said that his favorite thing about Mrs. Garcia is how she is really fun and cool. His favorite memory with her is in 7th hour when his class yells “good afternoon” at the beginning of class.
Noah Hall said that his favorite thing about Mrs. Garcia is how she cares about her students and wants her students to learn. His favorite memory in her class is when they were doing labs and his class wasn’t following directions. The most valuable thing he learned from Mrs. Garcia is to follow directions.
An anonymous student stated that their favorite thing about Mrs. Garcia is how she really cares about her students and is the best teacher. Their favorite memory with Mrs. Garcia was when they made her a Christmas present and she had the biggest smile on her face. The most valuable thing they learned from Mrs. Garcia is to always get your work done on time and to ask for help when you need to.
An anonymous student stated “It's hard to choose just one thing about Mrs. Garcia that I like the most, but I do have an idea of what it is. Mrs. Garcia has been there for me through thick and thin and she has never given up on me. When I was younger, Mrs. Garcia told me: "You can be whoever you want to be. Don't let anyone tell you differently." This single thing that Mrs. Garcia said to me changed my life forever. After this, I changed my ways and went on to become a better person. This has to be my favorite thing that Mrs. Garcia has taught me. With that said, my favorite thing about Mrs. Garcia is her kind personality and how she believes that anyone can change given time”. They further stated “My favorite memory with Mrs. Garcia is when we were doing a science experiment in class and she told us to create different colored flames with a variety of substances. Because some of the flame colors were very close to one another, throughout the experiment she helped us determine each color clearly. This may be one of my favorite memories because it shows how much of a kind and genuine person Mrs. Garcia is. It is clear that she loves to teach and cares for each of her students equally, even if they cause her trouble. I love how Mrs. Garcia can see the good in people, even if they are trouble makers”. They subsequently stated “The most valuable thing that I have learned from Mrs. Garcia is to be myself and to treat others the way that they want to be treated, not the way that I want to be treated. She has led me to become a better person and to change my previous ways of thinking. I used to believe that money was the way to happiness, but she has taught me that the way to happiness isn't money at all. "The real way to happiness," said Mrs. Garcia, "is to care for others and to treat them the way that they want to be treated. If I am being completely honest with you, [my name], you will get nowhere in life treating others the way that you want to be treated, because you are much different than they are and they are much different than you are." This had to be one of the best lessons that I have been taught in my life. If you are reading this Mrs. Garcia, thank you. Thank you for all that you have done for me and every other student that you have taught”.
Thank you to Mrs. Garcia and to all of the students who gave their feedback!
Congratulations, Sonny!
Sonny was chosen to receive the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan TEAM FIRST Award, which is given to one member per varsity team who most exemplifies putting team before self, teamwork, commitment, service, and sacrifice.
