What kind of disturbance creates an electromagnetic wave?
Different Ranges of Electromagnetic Spectrum:
It has the shortest wavelengths, less than 0.01 nanometers. It has the highest frequency and the momst activity of the spectrum. It can be made as a result of nuclear reactions, processes in pulsars, quasars, and black holes. It has a wavelength of < 1 x 10-11 m and an energy of. It mostly passes through skin and soft tissue and is absorbed by some cells.
X-rays have a wavelength of 1x10^-11-1x10^-8, a frequency of >3x10^19, and an energy of 2x10^-17-2x10^-14. It has a lower frequency than gamma radiation. X-rays pass easily through skin, but not through bone or metal. It is used to look at our bones and for treating cancer.
UV has a wavelength of 1x10^-8-4x10^-7. It is found naturally in sunlight, which causes us to tan. It is used in sun beds, security pens, and fluorescent lights. It has a frequency of 7.5x10^14- 3x10^16 and an energy of 5x10^-19-2x10^-17.
Radio waves have a lower frequency (>1x10^-1Hz) than microwave. A radio reciever does not need to be directly in the view of a transmitter. It has a wavelength of <3x10^9m and an energy of <2x10^-24 J. Radio stations transmit electromagnetic radiation (NOT sound). Radio stations use radio wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation to send signals that the radios then transmit into sound.
The sun emits the most of the radiation in the visible range. Our eyes are only sensitive to this portion of the elctromagnetic spectrum. It has a wavelength of 4x10^-7-7x10^-7m, a frequency of 4x10^14-7.5x10^14 Hz, and an energy of 3x10^-19-5x10^-19 J. One of the most important characteristics of visible light is color. Objects don't have color, they give off light that appears to be color.
This type of radiation is absorbed by the skin and felt as heat. Some places it's used is toasters, heaters, and grills. It is also the light on the top of a television remote. It has a wavelength of 7x10^-7-1x10^-3m, a frequency of 3x10^11-4x10^14 Hz, and an energy of 2x10^-22-3x10^-19 J.
Microwaves with certain wavelengths are absorbed by water molecules and can be used for cooking. Water in the food absorbs the microwave radiation. It can also can be used to transmit mobile phone calls. It has a wavelength of 1x10^-3-1x10^-1m, a frequency of 3x10^9-3x10^11 Hz, and an energy of 2x10^-24-2x10^-22 J.
